TOE INJURY

HI

my pup has had this injury for about 3 weeks now. went to the vets and gave me some anti inflamatrys which didnt work. vet said it may be fractured and all he would do is strap it up to which the gog wripped off,,ive told by a fellow user to use bone radial which will help a fracture.or can anyone recomend a good type of wrapping that the dog would find difficult to get off???

any ideas please

had this type of injury a couple of times before first time in my youth with a big coursing type lurcher and did as you did went to the vets; anti-inflamiteris (sorry cant spell either) bandages and repeat visits any way dog lost its toe, another time I was out coursing with a guy who kept racing greyhounds and my dog a 3/4 grey 1/4 collie got identical injury remembering my old dogs injury I was devastated as I could imagine a similar fiasco (EXPENSIVE) vet routine, any way seeing my distress my companion with greyhound racing experience imediately took my dogs toe and nicked it bellow the swelling with his knife and told me to keep it clean and gently rub the swelling or the dog would get a solid lump on its toe, well it worked dog was laid up till the next season and ran again . now I keep my dogs toe nails trimmed back about a third to a quarter of the lenth of your dogs nails this greatly reduces the chances of a knocked toe, BUT AM SURE THERE ARE MORE EXPERIENCED DOG MEN ON HERE WHO CAN GIVE MORE EXPERT ADVICE THAN ME.

My 7 month old pup had a very similar looking injury, about two months ago she had two lots of anti-Inflammatory's. NO excercise for a week then lead walks only a further 2 weeks (it was a bloody nightmare). I gave it a daily massage which apparently reduces the risk of cartilidge making the joint stiff.

 

The toe is bigger than the toe on her opposite foot now, however, she does have free movement in it and it does not cause her a problem running .

 

I would be very careful strapping as I have heard that strapping incorrectly can make a fracture/dislocation worse.

 

As with FLY i am sure there are people with more experience on here than me.

yeaqh mate bone radial works a treat , all my pals use it on there dogs , it will help calcify the damaged area and make the ligaments stronger, also to keep on top of the dogs fitness the flow of blood circulation alsoaids recovery so dont just lay him up , try swimming i recommend it for anydog

had the same injury on my dog 3 yrs ago, but it was a back toe, the vet said it was a deep nail infectionand gave me some antibiotics 6week later he was still saying it was an infection, so i went to a different vet and before i lifted the dog onto the table he said the toe was broke and needed to come off, 3 weeks after the operation she was running around as good as new,and the operation cost a lot less than 6 weeks worth of antibiotics, so in my experience its best to get a 2nd opinion, hope you get it sorted mate

it looks infected quite inflamed looking maybe a course

of antibiotics would do the trick but dont understand

why the vet hasnt exrayed it .i would look for a descent

no not at all mate, the way she used to run about you'd think she had been born with 3 toes, unfortunetly she was ran over and killed(by myself) about 6weeks after the operation, and this was springtime so i never got the chance to see what she was like on a hards night lamping.the sting in the tail was i got the bill thruogh the post the day i buried her. keep us informed mate

I personally would use bone radial and a laser (or ultrasound if had one) I would also of cut the quick on the the nail to release the build up of pressure, then it simply comes down to rest at least 6 weeks but unfortunately these types of injuries will inevitably break down again through time each time it is re-injured the likelyhood of it healing is greatly reduced.

 

The fact that your dog is just a pup with bones still growing is one thing that is on your side for a good recovery, however resting a young pup is a bit of a nightmare due to them wanting to play all the time. I would suggest getting some ACP from your vet and use a crate to limit it movement, I went through this with my Saluki pup after my O/H's lurcher ran into the pup breaking his toe when he was 14 weeks old, from past experience I enforced exercise by sedating him for a about 4 weeks and keeping him on a lead for 8 weeks. It's a nightmare I was totally stressed the whole time by the thought of him being on off lame for the rest of his life, but "touch wood" he appears to have made a full recovery.

 

It is this kind of injury that has me keeping pure Salukis these days, best feet in the business.

Jugding by the discoloration of the nail at the base, it may shed the cover or lose the nail completely...... I'm not sure it's a bone injury, toe nails will pull up a dog, just as easy.....

Scotty get yourself to your local or nearest greyhound track and ask about for a good foot vet down there,these boys are people you want to talk to.Theres some decent vets in practise when it comes to toe injuries ect but most are no better than competent,all the best mate and good luck with your pup pal
