moonlighter 1,164
I run saluki crosses, and they are pretty decent lamping dogs. As for ferreting though, there are better Xs out there but they will give it a good go. So if you've got a coursing dog, take it ferreting by all means, but if you want a ferreting dog, don't buy a coursing bred dog. Quote Link to post

BLACKWATER... 157
gareth just get one who ticks your boxes, had several people out with saluki crosses working rabbs , lamping coursing, was out with a few lads from durham down on there patch ,the got there eyes opend up at the ferreting , lamping and how steady they can be ,if brought on right ,maybe you should try for dogs that are steady and sensible ,as it does come through in breeding bred an old dog i have to a [bANNED TEXT] coursing type bitch her father was a real fen dog winning allsorts , when we put the two of them together pups came good not as highly strung ,and clever on all sorts ,its no t the saluks and there crosses that are all mental its the types and the owners who dont help ,ferreted lamped coursing dogs for twenty years useing them for a bit ferreting some days ,driving feilds ,walked up etc , i can pass several warrens localy and the old saluk cross will only mark the one with a rabit even tho some look fresh, ive ran ferrets thru them nothin ,coursed al sorts when he was 2 3 4 year old , get the [bANNED TEXT] type that are steady , when you by a pup see what parents are like of leash see how steady they are etc , some saluks are very highly strug you want one laid back until the chase had both , one was steady young other took three seasons then she was briliant but alas got knocked down on qaurry survived and came back but took a while to get her right again ,be careful what lines you get and if they have atouch of collie sometimes beter for allround work Quote Link to post

coverdogs 888
hi garath i have a coursing dog here he is 29 ins tts i mostly use him for the red fellows beating cover during the day and lamping . before a nights lamping i would take him to a place near me where there is a lot of rabbits for a couple of runs to settle him as he can be a bit too lively when calling a fox . his first time out i walked him up on a rabbit thinking to myself he dosent stand a chance off getting this and my two friends comeing behind one with a collie cross and the other with a 3/4 grey 1/4 bull giggleing and whispering thinking the same as me but not saying it . but no problem the rabbit got up about 15 yards in front off me probley with the noise off the two c--ts behind me the big dog run it like a pro picking it up as it turned for the hedge got two more and missed two he suprised us all . so if you are asking coursing dog for rabbits a big yes but go on your own the first time atb coverdogs 2 Quote Link to post

rob284 1,682
imo any decent cross bred and trained properly is capable of catching rabbits, tall small, its a nack really. once they got it they're fine. Quote Link to post
