Coursing Dog for rabbits...

Recommended Posts

A good mate of mine is looking to get a coursing bred pup (full saluki dam x line bredcoursing sal/grey sire).

He wants a coursing bred pup for a couple of reasons, a) because he just likes them and saluki crosses and B) because he has got friends in Ireland where he will be able to go regular for hare coursing.

Now the question is how good will it or should I say "could it" be on rabbits? Daytime and on the lamp?

We lamp a lot and our thinking is that if it is schooled as a ferreting and lamping dog then it may make a decent dog?

A few lads have said coursing dogs won't bother with rabbits etc but is this because they are raised as predominantly coursing dogs?

If raised as rabbit dogs surely they would make a fine job of it and also be handy on the daytime long ears when he goes to Ireland?

Thanks

Gaz

Yes the whippets are a little more agile on the smaller fields, but if there sat out then she picks them up for fun. She's surprises me how quick she can turn for a big dog and she has a good turn of foot. She's from the merlin and eve lines

what do you consider the difference to be between the larger and smaller fields? just interested in the whippets capabilities. would the whippets catch during the day if they are sat out in the field? :victory:

Of course the whippets would catch if they were sat out in the fields mate. The land i run the dogs on vary from 2 acres to 50 acres. The whippets do better in the smaller fields as the rabbits arn't far from the hedges even if there sat in the middle!!, there alot quicker on the turn and keep them away from the hedge better than the saluki x does.
