Hep 0
Hi I recently decided to begin shooting again, I used to do a lot of pest control down my local allotments I.e Rats, rabbits etc. I used to use a Springer and occasionally the ratcatcher. This time I've decided that I'm gonna try and get some new permissions, I've recently purchased an S200. The other day I went around a few farms not far from me and done a bit of door knocking, as you guessed I had no luck. Either people are already shooting on the land or they just not interested in you. I'm just wondering if any of you guys have any advice on what to say. Truthfully Im just not to sure on how to put myself across to them to make them interested in giving me a chance on their land. ATB Richy Quote Link to post
StevoSmith 147
I always go dressed smart/casual....i never wear trainers..Also as most farmers are a grumpy bunch i always take an intrest in thier work...small talk asking about lambing/calfing and crops and all that..about how thier coping with the weather and so on...as they dont get out much they are normally greatful for some-one to speak to...i do this even if they have knocked me back as sometimes they will change thier mind after chatting to you......Always take permission slips in your wallet and always take your insurance with you......take refarences from other shooting perms if you have any..Ask if they get Feral pigeons in thier barns..as most farmers dont like them thier when they cr@p in water and feeder troughs...Moles is another way of getting the farmer on your side....invest in mole traps and say you will clean out his mole problem(if he has any)..Probuck on this forum can guide you in this department.......One thing i will say is dont swear and cuss...be respectful and if you still get knocked back just leave your number with him and move on...he may not want and pest control sorting but he might know someone who does....good look with it pal Quote Link to post
Lewis Ste 245
where abouts in the north east are you? lewis Quote Link to post
Hep 0
Hi and thanks for the advice Stevosmith, much appreciated mate and I will certainly trying it out the next time I go :-). Hi Lewis ste I live near a town called Peterlee just off the coast but I am willing to travel a fair distance for some good shooting mate. ATB Richy Quote Link to post
Lewis Ste 245
I went to college at east Durham college but was at the houghall site, if I had some half decent permission I'd ask you if you fancied a trip out. Maybe during the winter when I'm driving and and gained abit more Lewis Quote Link to post
hutch6 550
Just had a look where you are and it looks like there is plenty of land to go at up there. Draw a triangle from Peterlee to Middleborough and Sedgefield, get a letter drawn up, use the web to find the details of the folk that might require pest control in that triangle and get the letters sent off. I'm sending out 15 letters today after the last 10 failed before that and from the first ever 30 I sent I had two responses and now have two small permissions. Out of 55 letters I will still be happy with two local permissions - one has rabbits, the odd pigeon and corvids and the other I am only allowed to shoot the rats for the time being but there are loads of bunnies and a few pigeons, I just have to play the game and bide my time. When I drive places to get things like dog food (chicken process plant in the middle of the North York Moors) or if I have a day out with the dogs or the girlfriend and we pass a place I like the look of and it is within easy reach I will pop in and have a word - I gained a 30acre farm doing that and my cousin out trumped me with 500acres doing the exact same thing (luckily we shoot together so I get to share also). I buy meat from a farm shop and I am getting on good terms with the owner, he knows I shoot as I talk to him about it, just not asked him yet. Quote Link to post

ATB Richy Well this is how it is mate..All you are to them is another air rifle weilding individual that tryes to come across as a pest controller thats going to do them a favour by shooting the odd rabbit ect..And to be honest from reading your thread, there not far wrong...sorry for coming across so seemingly harsh. Try look at another way..like this.."Theres no such thing as a free meal". Try making yourself usefull..learn mole trapping, rat trapping, bird trapping..migpies, jackdaws ect..By offering these services your now starting to sound usfull, and in return you will gain the respect you diserve..Then soon after youll get your shooting permission, and pleanty of it. Your also more likley to end up with soul permission on the land you do your thing on...Whos more usfull..the average pigion, rabbit shooter or the man that can cover All aspects of vermin control. I know who id give permission to. Atb Marty Edited June 21, 2012 by Probuk 1 Quote Link to post

Think you should have mensioned...its easy if you know how. Mole trapping can be easy, But if you dont know how, you will only add to the already damaged caused and make yourself look a tad foolish at the end of the day. Marty Quote Link to post

Hep 0
Thanks for all the replies guys. I've recently downloaded a permission letter uploaded by the guys on here. I'm gonna tweak it to suit me personally and print a couple dozen off and distribute them around my surrounding area. I'm also gonna send a few emails to landowners a bit further away rather than travelling the distance. I'm interested in the mole catching idea too, do any of yous guys recommend any places to learn from I.e. YouTube, tutorials etc. Also thanks Lewis Ste and I will certainly have a trip out with you if I gain some good permission mate. ATB Richy Quote Link to post

Then find somthing to use as a probe for finding tunnels...i use an old electric fence bar.. the type that have a loop on the top. You need a knife for starting your hole.. as it need to be smaller than the width of a troul and your traps. Find an old spade or shovel and cut off the T handle or use two hammers as i do..this is to make the hole wider and faiming up the base of tunnel..Easy moling is ALL about setting your trap properly and making sure its firmly set in the tunnel and you do this by making sure the soil is very firm on all sides and base of the tunnel..its also a good idea to drag out soil thats already in the tunnel..i do this by using a very very Small troul..this helps to stop the mole setting off your trap by..Back filling the trap with access soil that needs to be moved by the mole. If you need help PM me anytime. Dont bother with youtube..youl learn nothing there... try a site called.... Mole trapping at Walcote Farm. Youl learn what you need to know there. When you get your tools and traps together, go ask your local farmers for permission to practice moleing..Id bet you dont get one refusel And now your in your first real steps to becoming a vermin controller, wether it be a hobby or to earn a few quid doing it. hotshot2me 31
You have as already been said to be polite at all times, always use your insurance ID as your introduction, Learn everything you can about the quarry you intend to ask permission for, but don't bore him to death. if the Farm as sheep on, and plenty of Rabbits inform him that 8 Rabbits will eat in one day the equivalent of one sheep, so he should soon get the idea that you'll be doing him a favor, and don't be pushy: Dave Quote Link to post
