Puzzled tbh

Right lads I'm gutted tbh I've a lurcher here who is 4 yrs old which is my sisters

 

I got him last year as is seen him work and what a dog , brilliant but last week my sister and my dad were walking him on my land he was off lead walking by my sister when he took off jumped two fenced and went straight for the sheep , nailed one holding it down , my dad got the dog off and gave him a thrashing he's never done this before he's always been solid with livestock he is walked by the sheep everyday and never took a second glance , I worked him last season lamping in sheep fields he was running rabbits near sheep . I'm fecking annoyed tbh don't know why he's done this , my dad has now give him to me and said you have him and do what you thinks best but I don't know what to do I'd normally say PET home or pts but this dogs had 3 seasons off good graft and I don't want to part with him. What's your thoughts lads do you think he can be corrected or is their no way .

Back to basics mate, or try a training collar? There's so many factors that could have fuelled this action, is he perhaps not had enough graft and perhaps too keen?

That's what I was thinking because he's a game fecker tackle owt and my sister wouldn't let me work him as often as I wanted as she said he's my pet not yours but I kept saying you can't take a dog like him out of working and have him sitting on his arse doing nowt I said frustration but now the dogs mine do you think if I keep letting him no sheep or a no and give him the graft he may come good?

There is no reason why not mate, time is a healer as the saying goes.

get him back in a field full of sheep on a check cord and see what happens, could just of been a one off but best to find out for sure

Cheers mate hopefully he will I'll do everything I can to get him sorted I'm not going to give up on him even if there is no way to get him right he'll stay with me as a pet

I'd agree with what has been sai, it may wel be down to not enough work, and built up frsutration, he just wanted to run and nail something!

Yeah that's got to berth only reason , my sister diddnt like the idea of him working but the agreement was I could work the dig for her as we would both benefit but she had other ideas she hasn't been exercising him correctly either , he was lucky to get 15 mins a day so afew weeks back I started taking her walking with me and as you can see in the pic in my first post he rapidly got fitter , but I'm going to keep letting him know sheep are a no go and get him more work come the season providing I feel he can be trusted around the stock

I think you have found your answer mate, a working dog that has seem some decent action, isnt going to be happy being a house pet. If he has not shown signs before, and your ol man gave him a slap for it, i think yu have a decent chance of sorting it out.

Yeah he's a sound dog and took alot of quarry he knows his stuff , does it all really and as you said he was corrected so I think I can sort it cheers pal

Personally, for me I wouldn't be quick on giving up on the dog, it can be sorted.

 

Strange why he did, there could be a number of reasons. One of my dogs is doing some things that is testing my patience at the minute, things he certainly wouldn't be doing if he was running three days a week, which he was in season.

 

Remedy, a good lashing when he did it, certainly warranted. My father use to talk about putting a sheep killer in an enclosure with a ram?!? He said it cured his best dog, who was a serial sheep killer. If all else fails!?!

Yeah mate I'm not giving up on him I couldn't he deserves better, I'm gona do everything I can to get him sorted , and as you said if all else fails there is the ram idea as a last resort .

 

But I think he'll do fine ,my sister doesnt understand a working dog wants to work , but I'll take him on and try sort him out .

 

I'll keep update on his progress hopefully good progress lol

I have had several dog's do the same in the past that where rock steady around sheep..this time of the year can be made worse with all the dark coloured lamb's running about..that thrashing your dad give him may well of done the trick...well it worked for my dog's anyway.. ..personaly i would get him out among them regular preferably on a long lead.. praise for good and a good old tug of the lead with a stern NOOOOOOOOO for any interest in sheep..
