Gin 498
I will give more information as i get it,- there is more than one ferret with the distemper, but the post-mortem was only done on that one. Sunderland and Durham areas are possible areas of it, as ferrets have come in recently from those areas,- i took a call myself for advice on an ill ferret showing distemper signs, in the Witton Le Wear village area. There has been a distemper problem for some time in ferrets from Wolverhampton,- north. Shows were cancelled last year because of it. Quote Link to post
Deano71 4
I would defiantly look around at that price for the jab Round hear in Essex it's £15 per ferret. Mine have had it and had no problems. But some ferrets have bad reactions and can die from it! Not trying to scare people off of it. As I said my lot had it and were fine, but I only got it done as there was an outbreak last year near by. Also it's not always the rescues, it's just as it can devastate their lodgers and then your more likely to hear about it. A lot of rescues also pay out for postmortems to confirm cases of cd Not many hunters would pay out after loosing their fuzzy helper. Quote Link to post
moss 70
I may not have made that clear,- there was no reports of dogs in that area with it, but ferrets could be. The rescue Andy mentions had the ferret COME IN with distemper. I have just been informed the ferret show at Leeholme is going ahead. ! Saying they have had no contact with The North East Ferret Rescue, meaning what ? As i say, the distemper was already with the ferret when it was brought into that rescue. should this ferret show be cancelled ???? are dog shows cancelled when distemper is in the area ??? AndyKelly 251
most dogs are vaccinated against distemper when they have there first immunization jabs - a ferret is not always given the cd jab. dog can recover from cd but it is 100% fatal in ferrets who have not been jabbed Quote Link to post

Which is mystifying as to how a ferret rescue can survive an outbreak without losing everything and burning all their set up Y.I.S Leeview Quote Link to post
AndyKelly 251
just sad when this happens to anybody Edited June 23, 2012 by AndyKelly Quote Link to post
Leeview 791
so have the rescue lost the lot? IMHO why would a rescue take in a sick ferret capable of spreading a virus and endangering their setup? Quarantine is useless against something that is airborne Y.I.S Leeview Quote Link to post

Gin 498
The majority of ferrets are fine as they were previously vaccinated, but a small number brought in were isolated, two died. Quote Link to post
DanRaistrick 53
ive had a ferret die unexpectedly with no symptoms in the past few weeks and another die today which did develop dark patches around its face and ears. these patches were not scabby and the ferret didnt show any other signs of distemper, although she did lose quite a bit of weight. after a consultation with the vets they said that its very unlikely that it was CDV, however ive got my other ferrets and dogs booked in for blood tests just to be safe. the likelihood is that its another virus, the vet said it may have been a strain of flu virus which has affected them but just to be safe we're all off to the vets to make sure!
