Hep 0
Hi all, I'm thinking about getting my S200 barrel threaded and I'm wondering where to go for the best Quality, service, reasonable pricing etc. Im in the North East area. ATB Richy Quote Link to post
AR177 588
I'm not sure of any in the north area, maybe darryl 'marksman' on the forum knows where to send it, depends on the distance you want to travel ATB Adam I personally recommend A&M custom gunsmiths but might be too far, can't beat the service, quality or price though Quote Link to post
matt_hooks 188
If you're even marginally competent with a spanner and an allen key, you should be able to take the barrel off and post it. A barrel shouldn't cost much to post, and that way you can send it to someone who you know will do a good job of it. Quote Link to post
Hep 0
I'm not really too keen on the idea of sending it in the post, but I am willing to travel upto about 2 hours to a decent gunsmiths for the work to be done properly Quote Link to post
matt_hooks 188
Problem is most good gunsmiths won't be able to do the threading "while you wait" as they're mostly up to their necks in work. That means travelling 2 hours to drop it off, then 2 hours again to collect it a couple of weeks later. Quote Link to post
nickarris83 17
A gun shop down my way (greenfields shooting ground) wanted £110 for barrel threading and debur for my old original mod 50 i told them where to go, i sent it to the bloke at vmach he charged £35 but i had to post it , also manchester airguns (colin) who does the reblueing does a good price . matt_hooks 188
£110 for threading an air rifle barrel??? I can get a centrefire rifle barrel threaded, recrowned and proof tested for less than that! Glad you told them where to go. Quote Link to post
nickarris83 17
I also used to shoot clays there at the same place and found somewhere else which was much better and half the price of there clays , im suprised the place hasnt shut down yet but they always seem busy . Nick Quote Link to post
waidmann 105
If I were asked to recommend someone for gun work it would be mike Norris You won't be disappointed. Waidmannsheil !! Quote Link to post
Tron 173
If you can remove the barrel there must be dozens of small engineering companies in your area who would do the work for £20 to £25 pounds being sub 12 fpe you dont have to pay to have it proofed ask for a centre lathe turner to do it. dont agree that it is cut with a die as that isnt allways going to be true to the bore. secretagentmole 1,701
Where in the Northeast are you, nearest big town? Whitby? Scarborough? Gateshead? The North East is a big area, basically from the Humber to the Tweed can be described as North East! Quote Link to post
Hep 0
Hi secretagentmole, I'm near Sunderland Quote Link to post
Tron 173
Hi secretagentmole, I'm near Sunderland I forgot to say that you should check if the diameter of your barrel is .500. (1/2 inch before you go any further because if its smaller you will be handicapped by the amount of moderators available is smaller thread sizes. I am not sure but if my memory is correct your barrel could be a smaller diameter,if so you could have it stepped down to fit the Air Arms normal moderator which is secured by a grub screw. instead of the usual 1/2 " unf threaded moderators. matt_hooks 188
Tron, bad idea. Barrel threading is not like running a thread on to any old piece of bar. Great care needs to be taken to ensure the thread runs concentric to the bore. The bore doesn't always run central, or true in the barrel. You also need to consider the rifling which can cause the barrel to sit off centre. Get it done by a proper gunsmith who knows what they're doing. As for proofing, most rifles when threaded don't need proofing. Don't get started on that one! Quote Link to post

You are correct Mat, As a time served Centre Lathe turner I am aware of the problems encounted with barrels, any good CLturners would of course screw it after mounting it on centres hence my advice not to have it done with a die. as for having it proofed you made the first reference to having your barrel done! in your first reply?.
