The new kennel/shed and run..

Well as some of you may know im getting my first lurcher on Friday..the only rule by the misses was it stays outside (2bedroom house 2 terriers and a 6month old .. no room for another dog haha) .. well the ferrets are in the shed about 4ft up in their hutches so i figured what better place to put a dog than underneath ... im a ceramic tiler and plasterer so joinery isnt my strong point but heres what ive come up with in 4 days.....

 

The flap is temporary.. think im going to try get some of that butchers stuff.. the bed area (not show) is raised and there is insulation around and underneeth...

 

thanks for looking....and before i put the pics on.. thanks to all the people ive been bothering over he past couple month of so for all kinds of info...

 

First we dug the stones and mud etc out ..

 

then started the fram on a good slope backwards to make sure water runs off..

 

stregnething the frame..

 

then it appears i lost some pictures but the roof and back was done with basic fence pine..

 

the side was done with tapered fence wood as that will be the bit on view .. needs staining but..

 

we got 2 brick guards for the mesh, used on scaffy, off a lad at one of the permissions.. framed it all to make it look neat and stronger

 

as i said, the flap is temporary.. underlay and wood knocked together in the shed while it was lashing down but does the job for now..

Great job mate ! Just one observation; you should have a gap between the bottom of the wood and the flagstones, for washing out and to stop the water getting on the wood and rotting it.

How do you clean the run out,i would of made the run 6 ft high not sure on the wood used prefer tng

if you carnt stand up in it, they become difficult to clean properly

there is a small gap and stones and what not for drainage (the pictures of the frame were took before we finalised it all properly but i assure you there is drainage) and im going to drill holes aswell in the wood.. i didnt want to put a door on the front of it..just because it seemed more hassle than it was worth.. im only short so i will just climb through the shed to get into it.. i have to climb in the ferret run to clean it properly it doesnt bother me at all.. i couldnt make the run any bigger as theres a window in the shed i wanted to keep there.. its just over 5ft at the heighest point and im not even close to 6ft so dont even have to be on me knees haha

.. oh what you cant see is its 6ft from front to back and theres a gap at the back into gravel/stones and out the fence

 

that overlay stuff is bloody strong once its all screwed on and overlapped.. ive used it on the ferret run because it just looks decent once stained but its been booted so many times by me and other people its not budged especially with the framework its on.. just my personal preference really

 

 

theres still a few finishing touches to do dont worry

 

the dog will only be in there on a night and when im not home. free roam of the garden rest of the time

Good job.. . but i'm with Chart's on rasing the run a little bit just so you get a bit longer out of the frame work..the best method i have found is laying a few coarse of brick's or block's and build the frame work of that..but like i say good job and i'm not having a dig..

we all live and learn i would always have a kennel we can walk in, and always have the wood slightly raised off the ground so the wood doesnt soak the damp up and rot so quick

My ferret courts bigger than that mate, it's going to be a right pig to clean out too. My runs are 8x6, 6x6 and 6x4 all 7'6 high with a roof on, also have concrete runs as the paving slabs stink in the summer.

 

I also have galvanised run sections and the side of the shed is covered in galvanised steel sheet to stop the dogs biting the wood etc, makes washing down much easier too, plus the piss can't soak into anything and start to smell.
