Approaching Farms and Land Owners.....

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

Please excuse the silly question, but I've just got into shooting, and want to start approaching Farms etc to ask permission to shoot Rabbits and Rats on their land.... I try not to look like a total idiot as much as possible, but have no idea about....

Do all farms have vermin problem? So if you ask, are you likely to be laughed at as being a simpleton?

Do 99% of farms already have someone shooting on their land, and if they do is it the "done thing" to have more than one, or is that now treading on toes? Can I offer to speak with the incumbent and see if they don't mind sharing?

Are farmers largely open to people Rabbiting, or are the odds stacked against you?

Is there usually a preferred time Farmers are happier to have you on their land, which you should offer?

I know these are some very vague questions, and depends if I catch a nice farmer, if he's having a good morning, or if Rabbits have just eaten all his crops etc, but any advice or tips on the best way to approach it and sound useful would be appreciated.

Regards,

Matt

well as to do all farms have vermin problems, yes to some degree i guess is the answer, farmers are a funny breed but be confident when chatting with them is your best bet, also even if they say they dont have much in the way of vermin just say "well if thats the case i can keep it that way as its easyer to control before it is a problem" lol that ones worked well for me in the past.as to stepping on toes, well i get alot of calls to take care of pest problems where they have someone, not your fault if they ant good anothe to sort it,well thats the way i see it ;) as to having just one shoot i guess thats personal choice,im up to around 40 at the moment but i do this 7 days a week

most farms will have a problem with at least one of the air rifle general license vermin ! and no as long as your sensible and polite.but most say "no thank you!"

Do 99% of farms already have someone shooting on their land, and if they do is it the "done thing" to have more than one, or is that now treading on toes? Can I offer to speak with the incumbent and see if they don't mind sharing?

no not at all some none some 5/6 depending on acres

Are farmers largely open to people Rabbiting, or are the odds stacked against you?

some are some will not, odds are against you if you go cameod up and ask, dress smartly, and be polite, shooting insurance is a must!

Is there usually a preferred time Farmers are happier to have you on their land, which you should offer?

offer when its convenient for them ,for you to call upon there land? some want 24/7 some want just week ends some just evenings.

Hi

a must is insurance!

Have you sent any lettrs out? try these

http://www.thehuntin...r-of-liability/

Also it’s just not farmers.

try these places

horse paddocks,

hotels,

football grounds,

rugby grounds,

industrial estates,

business parks,

golf courses,

cemeteries,

manor houses,

country clubs,

riding shcools,

ect..ect.........

If all else fails then check out the shared permission on here.if that still fails, and then get knocking on more doors

Here are two links to insurance

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the prompt and helpful replies.....

Think I'm going to sign up with the BASC, insurance policy seemed very reasonable and at a good price.

Thanks Davy for a great list of suggestions, I hadn't thought about industrial estates, cemetaries and Hotels, but makes perfect considering I used to live at a crematorium and listened to Dad moaning like *uck about Rats and Rabbits!

I'm waiting to get the ok from a local football club who have a Rat problem, so already tapping up local sports grounds :) !

Farmers are very funny people .. they are very wary of strangers taking a random interest in there property.

things you have to remember

Farmers are very busy people and dont want there time wasted, so when you get there make your intentions clear and dont waffle trying to butter them up - also point out how time consuming it is to keep the vermin away, if the farmer dosnt have to shoot them there is something else he can be doing.

They want to be sure that the person they are letting shoot around their livley hood isnt going to put pellet holes in the animals or equipment!

Show them what you will be shooting with and how quiet it is, this will help dispel any notion that you will be scaring the animals, but dont just turn up waving a rifle around as they will have bigger guns than you for sure!

Farmers are very tight fisted  so make them aware its a free service

Have some paperwork - permission paperwork makes you look like you know what your doing  and also point out you will be doing it all at your own risk, i.e if you fall over and do your ankle in you wont be suing the farm.

P.S i had to marry the farmers best friend to get permission to shoot on his land :thumbs: haha!! was worth it though for all that land! :haha:

could always try the old fashioned approach

Paul, you very much flatter me, I have a horrible feeling with shirt off I'm more likely to be milked/shot, haha...... Thanks guys, have just joined BASC, so will get some insurance stuff printed off, as well as the permission type sheets.

I guess we shall see!

Hi Mate

Don't put them on a pedestal! Farmers use the loo like the rest of us! Just ask politely and go from there! The hardest person to ask will be the first person you do, but it gets easier from there with persistence.

Good luck!

Hi Guys,

Just wanted to say a massive thank you to davyt63 for sharing the permission letters, and all of you for your advice.... I took the letter, made a few small tweaks and sent a version out via email to a number of local farms, paddocks and golf courses, and today within 3 hours of sending one email I got a call from the owner of a fruit farm who is "plagued with Pigeons" and are desperate for someone to help them out :) !

Just wanted to share the good news and positive vibes!
