My new scope.

Recommended Posts

Guys i would just like to give some of you the "Heads up" over a new scope choice. I was shooting a Hawke Eclipse 3-9x50 scope, well it was on top of the gun and the guy said that it was zeroed at 35 mtr/yards (the chap wasn't sure). Well it did me very well at the begining, but i soon felt the need for a new one. Why what was wrong with it you may ask and to be truthful my answer holds no water, but i knew that the gun (Air Arms 410) would relish a finer scope.

If, no when any of you that had been on the look out for a new scope, you know how daunting it is. Do i stick with the maker that i have here, or do i go for the same as your mate has. Well to be truthful you could drown in all of the technology that is out there for you to take in. So your decision gets a whole lot easier if you can get some tips from other who are not on commission to sell you this or that scope.

Well for me, my port of call was to listen to Si Pittaway's words. If you have not met or do not know who this man is just type his name into "YouTube". I am sure this man fires more lead in one year than i will shoot in my lifetime, (no punns intended) and no dirty jokes here please. I have had the great pleasure to meet the man, and yes i do class him as a man and indeed hero for he has served his country for 22 years keeping me safe. During those 22 years he has been trained by the Army to understand the science of trajectories and ballistics, alright ballistics are not needed by air-riflers but trajectories are very important.

So at first i thought that if i went for bigger numbers on the scope that would be the way to go. So i bought a Simmon 6-24 but as soon as i got it mounted and was able to look through it, i knew it was wrong for me and my shooting. Lucky that the company took it back and refunded very quickly. Now talking to myself i told me to just buy the one that Si is happy with, which was and is the Hawke Panorama. So ordered it and did the maths that as i ordered before 2pm that my scope should be in my sweaty hands in time for the Bank Holiday weekend, but no. So it still gave me a two day window of oppotunity before i was leaving for the Hunting Life Forum Meet, that way if it came either Wednesday or Thursday i could still get out to zero it as best as i could. But no, the best laid plans and all that. So alright if i left it as late as i thought fair, reading all the peoples posts saying yeh i'll be there this and that. So i set out, leaving behind all my shooting stuff because of no scope blah blah. Just around the corner from home i see the postie (i call them that because we have lady posties)in the next street to mine. So turn around and go back home on the off chance, but no. Now head off for the meet. My eldest daughter phones when i am about 12 miles from destination to tell me that the scope had just arrived.

Arrive at the meet location where i call Si on his mobile to announce my arrival, he then comes down to let me in. A quick hello and handshake before he gives me dirrections to park. I get out of my car and this time i get a proper handshake and welcome. How long have i known this man because immediately felt at ease, then a little bit of guided tour and also meet the other early arrivals Daz7, Huntsman, Neil & Anne aswell as Laura (Mrs Pittaway to be). Over the weekend i had chance to look through various scopes, but i wanted mine. My plan was to get Si to zero my gun/scope over the weekend because with my medication i twitch (no thats not bird watching before any clever bugger has a go), so wanted my gun/scope zeroed by him but my plan was a big failure.

Anyhow after the weekend meet, i got home to my new scope. I went for a Hawke Panorama 4-12x50 ir ev, so i fitted it ontop of my Air Arms 410 Carbine in walnut stock. My back garden is to small to zeroing anything except a pistol, so off to my permission we go. After a few shots, where i was missing an A4 sheet of paper to start with. I had to watch the grass to see if i could get an idea of where to go in adjustment, finally i get onto an A4 page then onto a target. In the end i managed to get a group of five touching shots, then 10 touching ending up with 20 shots all through the hole that i made.

So Si i will still like you to fine tune it if you would be so kind. Anybody that is looking for a new scope, you need look no further than the Hawke. I will be in contact Si.

Thankyou to everybody that was at the meet that let me touch their gun over the weekend of the meet, and before anybody says it NO I'M NOT THE TURRET TWISTER.

Hi Roger,

I'm really glad that you got your scope o.k pal and that you are happy with it buddy  .

As I told you over the weekend, Tony Wall calls it his favourite Hawke scope sold by Deben due to the optics quality and he is someone I really look up to myself.

I'm sure it wont be long before you are knocking vermin over right left and Chelsea with it pal.

Thanks for the kind words too pal, your a pretty cool guy yourself mate.

Well Guys and Gals i thought i would let you all know how im settling in with the new scope.

The new scope (the Hawke Panorama 4-12x50) is really great with lovely clear optics. Went out last night with the IdleBack Chair which Chaz gave me (for the signed Chelsea shirt that i gave him), set-up with car driven into the field as far as i dare then set-up chair/gun facing into wood. I had enough light to set-up NiteSite, boy oh boy if the cross hairs are faint during daylight at night they just become lines which i can't see mil-dots. Even so once it became dark the rabbits came out, i was watching one eye bobbing in and out of the undergrowth. Whilst i could only see one eye and not an outline of the rabbit i refused to take the shot infear of not having a clean kill. But eventually he came out and wack aimed straight at eye, he went down without a twitch.

On went headlamp or should i say headtorch as not to confuse you, i also grabbed my long shooting sticks. Well when i got to where i thought he was - NOTHING - oh no has he managed to squirm down one of the holes, so fed-up as i couldn't find him i returned to the car and the IdleBack chair. Then readjusted my bearings well the first time i was looking in the wrong place, things look so different at night in the dark well this time i found him. Stone dead for the pellet had struck hard and true (Accupel for they shoot a tighter group than even more than AirArm pellets, the Accupel aim is about 1" higher aswell), smashing his skull pushing out his brains from the exit wound. Boy he was a big one not only a large rabbit but also a very well endowed, i think he was going after some ladies tonight. Back at the car i gutted him disguarding his bits for the scavengers, using my water that i had bought out for my coffee to wash him clean. Lord only knows what reaction i would have got from my children if they knew where i was cleaning him, well i was being thoughtful by putting down some paper towl on the back seat. I ended up with three, daddy, mummy and baby rabbit. I could of got more but i have no idea on how much space i was going to be allowed for my killed meat, i thought if i take them home and she won't give me any space then both my lad and i could have rabbit something for our evening meal.

Well when i got home before the rest of my family had got out of bed, i sat in the back garden listening to the dawn chorus while i proceeded to skin and behead the three. I feel that weather permitting i will try to do an all nighter with me sat on IdleBack in the wood, for i know the runs and feel that if i use walking sticks. I will be safe enough to be able to retrive my kills and lord knows how many that may lead too?

So all in all i am very happy with the scope (i better remind you of what one as i seem to have rambled again) the Hawke Panorma. During daylight the crosshairs although very fine work fantastically, even if illuminated the hairs appear fine. My problem is not the scope rather than the Nite-Site, it or i can not get a sharp enough focus.

Thank you go out to both Si Pittaway and Davyt63 as they both recommended it, guys you can print this and take to Hawke to get some sponsership deal? Just a thought guys.
