jodi87 0
I'm looking to buy a variable scope for use on a .243 x bolt to be used for fox and stalking. I am waiting on my FAC and have been looking around for a set up. I don't have any experience but I have decided on the x bolt because it feels good to me and it gets good reviews. I am now looking at scopes and at the moment I'm between a ziess duralyt 3x12x56 and a S&B 3x12x56. Has anyone any experience of these scopes as they both look great and I cant decide which one to go for. Any advice would be welcome. Cheers Quote Link to post
PlasticJock 539
S+B mate. Haven't used much else but it's guaranteed quality at any range and at low light levels... Try and look for ex demo Quote Link to post
jodi87 0
The only thing I'm not sure about is the way the reticle gets bigger with the magnification on the S&B Quote Link to post
PlasticJock 539
So does your target Quote Link to post
coldweld 65
Save your cash and buy a fixed 8 x 56 or 8 x 50. I have a S&B 4-16 x 50 and it is usually set on x8-10 on a target/stalking rifle on my two fox rifles i have 8 x 56 S&B's on my main stalking rifle i have a swarovski 8 x 50 Would i buy another £ 1500 variable ? proberbly not the only time i use high mag is to check 100m targets Quote Link to post
jodi87 0
So does your target I thought if you magnified a target at 300 yards it would look like a target at 100 yards but if the cross hairs are much thicker then it must limit your picture of the target. As I said I am new to this and have only looked at them in the shop and have no field experience Quote Link to post
coldweld 65
Jodi what are you shooting at 300m deer or fox ? Quote Link to post

As I said I am new to this and have only looked at them in the shop and have no field experience Tbh I've never had any problems, IMO a fixed scope is the best option 6x42 or 8x56, try and work out what the usual range you'll shoot at is, then if it's say 200m try a few scopes at 200m see what sight picture works best for you Quote Link to post
jodi87 0
Jodi what are you shooting at 300m deer or fox ? Never shot anything before, apart from an air gun and shotgun, on the airgun I have a variable hawk which works fine but I want to buy once and everyone says buy the best you can afford and I've been advised by the dealer that the ziess duralite is the best buy. If I'm going to be using it for fox and deer he reckons I need a variable scope, I don't have a clue that's why I'm asking the question. Quote Link to post

I've applied for a .308 for fox and deer, and I'll be getting a 8x56 S+B... Don't forget variables are more expensive and your dealer is a businessman after all.... Quote Link to post
remi700 99
You wont go wrong with any of the top European scopes, Schmidt, Swarovski, Zeiss, Kahles. You get what you pay for with glass and its really worth while investing in a good quality scope. You should have it for life. As said before its hard to beat fixed power scopes. Cheaper and less feckin about with them when time is short! I have a 8x56 Schmidt and I've shot foxes out to 300 yards with it at night. It take seriously good glass to do that! Cheers the best bit of advice I can give you is go for a fixed power scope with 7 times mag anything above your retina in your eye cant take in and stresses the optic nerve , also holding the weapon steady with larger magnification taking into consideration normal pulse beat at rest isnt a easy option to control. S&B are good optics but having said that the better build quality is the German variant dont go for the Hungarian their quality control is not up to the same standard, you will however pay more but bite the bullet and only consider the German variant. Anything else you need advice on just ask Cheers Stu P.S if you have a choice at the same money between a secondhand S&B or a Khales take the Khales they are far superior in every way. coldweld 65
Right Jodi Where abouts in the country are you ? Someone local might be able to help who is Not trying to make you wallet lighter. I have a S&B variable and new now would cost over £1800 its very nice BUT its on a target rifle and rarely gets wound above x9, Its to fine for low light shooting. When shooting Deer you will mostly be shooting at less than 150m dawn and dusk, fox mostly less than 300m so as most have said fixed is more than you will need. I have two S&B 8x56 and they are very good . Shot a crow at over 300m last night with my .17 fireball and a fox cub at last light at just under 300m My favorite though is a Swarovski 8x50 mounted a lillte lower than a 56 and i think better finished than the s&b but sadly discontinued. Don't get caught by the bigger more expensive is better listen to people that have done that and save some cash into the bargain. Good luck Quote Link to post
jodi87 0
Thanks a lot for your comments looks like I.ll be looking at fixed scopes again, sorry I didn't get back sooner but I.ve been away for a while. It wasn't only the long range targets I was thinking about when using the variable but the closer range targets. I was told you get a better field of view when you can move to a lower mag. Thanks again for your advice Quote Link to post
