Jordb543 9
Hi all, ive just been watching 'crimewatch roadshow' and they have just had a section with wildlife officers and rspca officers, they arrested a man on suspicion of badger trapping and baiting, the bloke had some traps in his garden and admitted he had caught a badger once by accident and an officer said one of the traps looked like a fox trap, the man wasnt charged so weather he did or not only he knows, but his dog was destroyed, at first glance it looked like a pit bull, now if it was then fair enough its illegal etc, but its not that i have an issue with, its what an officer said to the presenter when she asked how they can tell if it is an illegal dog, he said 'there are only a few experts in the country who can identify them and as the APBT, and as its no a be spoke breed, and not a proper breed, they go off a list of characteristics and traits to determine if its that type of dog or not' now i was under the impression that an American Pit Bull Terrier is an actual breed of dog, meaning their officers on the job are ill informed when surely they should know details like that, and i know that legislation says that a dangerous dog isnt determined by breed alone even though certain breeds are banned, but it just seemed a ridiculous way to determine if a dog is a 'dangerous' dog or not, what sort of traits and characteristics would they go off exactly? size? shape? muscle tone? head shape? behaviour? bearing in mind they take the dog away from its normal surroundings with total strangers to make these assessments so its behaviour would be far from the norm anyway, the whole thing just seemed ridiculous, you could have a labrador that hates children or is prone to attacking other people or dogs, and when they raid your garden it would know doubt be left in its pen, but the moment they see a bull type dog, could be a staffy, english bull or even a bulldog type cross they will take it away on their looks alone, fair enough if the dog is dangerous and is of that type then yeah destroy it, but the same should apply for all types of dog regardless of its looks, i know a few people on here have PBT where they are legal, and as its a terrier i figured i would post it here, if this is the wrong place for the this thread im happy for mods to move it to where they think it will be best Edited June 13, 2012 by Jordb543 3 Quote Link to post
tomano1 80
Just saw it mate it was a staff or some sort off breed but I have staff in me gallery and some guy off here says what is it crossed with she is a pure bred staff kc don't think that dog looked like much off a threat to me was good looking dog same as mine ripped to death and same as your dogs my dogs hate is them f..king cats that walk past me run and say f..k u dog u can not get me and of a bird then your plucked if you go in Quote Link to post
Jordb543 9
Your staff if a beaut mate, my neighbours staff was at mine for 6hours the other day, it keeps escaping and they let it roam around until someone brings it home, its a shame as she is a lovely dog, but thats what i mean if they came into your garden and saw you dog they would take it for assessment etc, if they came into my garden and the dalmation was doing the same i dont think he would be taken away even though he's a good sized dog, great muscle tone, and all becasue he's spotty and kids love that film lol, the dog was a bit vocal when it was in the pen but i think most dogs would be if 10 blokes with sheilds and the collar rod things barged into the garden, i know for a fact all three of mine would, but it was by no means a danger to anyone there Quote Link to post
j1985 1,984
APBT was never a recognised breed by the KC that's what the officer meant!! Quote Link to post
Jordb543 9
APBT was never a recognised breed by the KC that's what the officer meant!! Ahhh i see i always assumed it was, learn something new everyday, is it a recognised breed in the states? on the legislation for the dangerous dog act it says that a pit bull terrier is a banned breed of dog, and if the KC dont recognise it, what sort of breed standard do the authorities use to determine what is a 'pit' bull terrier and what are the differences between that and a legal bull terrier, or simililar cross type dog i wonder? North east finest 105
A good way to identify a apbt is it its should be squareish roughly the same lenght as height thats the main way the so called experts decide Quote Link to post
unlacedgecko 1,466
The authorities use a series of physical measurements and characteristics to determine if a dog is a banned pit bull type or not. There are 58 I think. "The American Dog Breeders Association's (ADBA) Basis of Conformation for the American Pit Bull Terrier, was and still is used as the 'yardstick' for identification in the courts." from http://www.endangereddogs.com/DDA_Identification.htm It is interesting to note that for such cases, the burden of proof is reversed. ie if a Police Officer says that your dog is of a banned type, then it is down to you to prove that it is not. There is no 'innocent until proven guilty'. In such cases behaviour is taken into account, but not conclusive. If you have a muscular short haired dog, which has a broad head and is as long as it is tall, the fact that it is the best natured animal in the world does not matter. It could be accused of being of a banned type. If you cannot prove that it is not a banned type then it is likely that the court will order its destruction. The system of measuring dogs to determine if they are of a banned type or not is a farce. Imagine a cross bred litter. There is often variation in the pups in such a litter. Once they reach adulthood, there will be differences in the size and shape of the dogs, even though they have the same parents. This could result in some of the dogs being destroyed for being of a banned type, while others from the same breeding are found to be not of a banned type, even though they have the same parents. Work them hard 339
Another programme with total biased! The traps were fox traps not badger traps as they said they forget to mention that any non target animal can be released unharmed with these traps but instead they try to make everything sound all dark and evil, Is it any wonder people are getting it into their heads that they need to phone the police if they see a man with a dog as the way they put it the hunting of any animal with dogs is illegal, now that come across to the general public that rabbiting, ratting with dogs etc is illegal! Its one of the things that really get on my tits especially when you think how many people these programmes are influencing! 2 Quote Link to post
