inan 841
Good point about the weather: though I honestly didn't think it needed mentioning. Given some of the idiots on here it is just as well to say don't do it in hot weather! Or only in places where the dog can drop into water for a cool down whenever it needs to. I bike round a reservoir so the dogs can go for a quick swim when they get hot. No need to go to a reservoir round here at the moment, the fields are flooded. The distance for biking is best gradually increased, and the time taken to do it conversely decreased .On hard surfaces too much, too soon , wears down the pads, surgical spirit will harden them off.. This time of year biking can give a dog a quick workout if time is limited , but isnt really necessary. I'm just doing an hours bushing a day, I won't do anything more intensive until August , and then it will be early morning, or at dusk when its cooler. Edited June 12, 2012 by inan Quote Link to post

sandymere 8,263
From nothing to 4 miles every night is too much; build up starting with just a couple of nights a week. I run with mine 4 or 5 times a week and use ball work, swimming extra on the other nights. When covering distance go for a trot not a canter which is as skycat says bloody slow on a bike. Its important to get some galloping in as trotting doesn’t activate the back muscles to any great degree so although its great for building a strong cardiovascular system its is not a complete exercise in its self. The most important bit is building up slowly be it galloping, trotting or swimming etc. 1 Quote Link to post

whippet 99 2,613
its surprising how fit the dogs get just trotting along side for 3 or 4 miles every other night, definately helps certain injuries. i think trotting steady does them the world of good 1 Quote Link to post
