skycat 6,173
IMO, 4 miles is fine as long as you are just jogging the dog at a speed of no more than 6 miles per hour. This is an almost impossibly slow speed at which to cycle: like watching paint dry. In fact you could paint the road as you went along at that speed , but it is a natural steady pace for medium to large sized dogs. You shouldn't cause any damage to even an 11 month old pup at a slow speed, but going faster could hammer its joints and feet: you need to build up to a faster pace slowly. Like others have said, don't do it every day until the dog is properly mature physically. I was doing 10 miles twice a week with my pups at 12 months old, with a short break after 5 miles. They didn't even know they'd done it, and wanted to play and gallop during the break. Dogs evolved to cover long distances at a steady trotting speed: not many get the chance nowadays. 1 Quote Link to post
Sirius 1,391
Just dont do to much to young IMO. and plenty of variation. Biking a dog in hot weather is also not a great idea, so wait for cool times of day (not a prob at the moment with this weather). A dog needs rest days as much as it needs excercise it's equally important to really get fitness on and to let the muscles develope and repair themselves. 1 Quote Link to post

skycat 6,173
Good point about the weather: though I honestly didn't think it needed mentioning. Given some of the idiots on here it is just as well to say don't do it in hot weather! Or only in places where the dog can drop into water for a cool down whenever it needs to. I bike round a reservoir so the dogs can go for a quick swim when they get hot. Quote Link to post
