NEHunter 14
Afternoon, Been thinking for a while that I would like a little bushing dog to walk with the lurcher, turn the walks into a mooch seen as I have pleanty of ground to walk over. Trouble is I have little experience of terrier/ spaniel/ beagle ownership. My partner has two Jack Russells who live in the house and althouch they hunt up behind the lurcher, they have never been taught to work cover etc so they don't!! Just wondering what you lads use on your moochs? And any experience of cover working dogs. Pictures, as usal, an added bonus! Thanks in advance, NEHunter Quote Link to post
dogs-n-natives 1,182
Used to run spaniel/terriers and spaniel/beagle/terriers, were a great dog for driving out any sort of covers from big woods and forestry to fell/moorland Quote Link to post
Chid 6,493
I used my father in laws springer a few times will hunt any cover but doesn't give Tongue. if I was wanting one my self I'd probably source a terrier x spaniel just for the possibility of giving tongue and the added bonus that it could/would grow to big to get down an earth Quote Link to post
graham4877 1,181
you'll not beat a springer like, all my bitch dose is hunt hunt hunt and hunt 3 Quote Link to post
spec 45
been loads of topics on this recently- the outcome seems to be that some prefer terriers, some prefer terrier x spaniels, and some perfer pure spaniels! Quote Link to post
spec 45
for me, I favour a pure spaniel - you can get a better level of obedience from them, there's no cover they won't go through, and they're unlikely to get to ground. 1 Quote Link to post
_Sean_ 15
i use pure spanials but for workin alongside the running dogs would have to be a first cross cocker russel great drive work fairly like the cocker but slower and gives tounge spanials can be to quick to work with lurchers Quote Link to post

I would favour a springer but it's the lack of giving Tongue that would put me off for working with the lurcher. Deffaintatly will face any cover and will hunt up like a maniac all day long Quote Link to post
Gaz_1989 9,539
My terrier... Awesome busher, finds anything anywhere and works all day. But as said in my other thread - a real pain in the backside at times. Gaz Quote Link to post

arcticgun 4,548
Planning to fetch in a springer meself next season, but for the last few seasons used this boy, who was gifted from a good friend, he's a proper workhorse and if its there he will find it, works like a year old even at nine Edited June 10, 2012 by arcticgun Quote Link to post
dogs-n-natives 1,182
Have always kept pure spaniels, cockers and springers, but for pushing fox or whatever from big areas of cover the cross breds tend to hunt a line better, give tongue, which is handy for the fellas waiting with the shotties or lurchers (for the rabbits lol) and yet they wont go miles away on a fox like a pure bred hound would. It all depends on what your needing from your bushing dog. But I agree for a close range flushing dog, and general pest control dog a spaniel is very hard to beat. Quote Link to post
