ye twenty years ago chalky sizwell was alive with game but the shingle beaches were hard going ,not wanting you take a film of a bouncing ball lol, but the dog was lethal strike ,and did it naturaly ,i liked the moucher films back then good crack for there day , after seeing hundrds of dogs work you only see a handful that rise above the norm ,the coolie crosses dont suit localy but there still a handy dog at times for allround work

ive had a few collie x's, i had my 1st as a pup in the 70's (jeez i'm old) over the years they suit me. beardies have a reputation for being headstrong....is that not where they get their drive? beardies are used to work away with sheep a lot more than borders.........is this why some lurcher guys struggle to adapt to them? borders are easier to train more people orientated.........is this why they are more popular as a cross? as with all crosses the mixing of different blood is great in theory and if you end up with the wrong mix of genes (which can be pot luck) it could be a real nightmare...... if i lived on the fens or had more arable type permission i'd probably have different views but as it is for my woodland / hedgerow type ferreting, rough ground lamping and general mooching collie x's are tops imo. admittedly theyr'e not for everyone but for the guy with the time and ability to train them, the ground to work them and plenty of game to put in front of them they do take some beating

I know hancock gets some stick, but the beardie border i had from him years ago really hit the mark, it just came so natural to him, didnt realise what a good dog he was until i had to replace him.....so laid back at home as well.

beardie/border mixes are rarely rubbish. i have seen a couple which seemed to have combined the worst qualities of the two and they indeed were poor, but i guess that might have been down to the handlers as all the others i've seen are very good, and a couple were superb including one bitch bred from hancocks current stud mr jones to a greyhound bitch, this was one of the best all-round dogs i've ever seen in 30 ears of dog work

as most know i'm a fan of the collie cross but it would be interesting to find out how many from a litter of pups that don't make the grade, were all 'bryn's' litter as good? maybe ray can join in... the same with my 'jazz' ? i know of one that didn't make it...........and going to the next step....... mating 'bryn' to 'jazz' what percentage of pups would make it? both good dogs and proven workers on all sorts of game but would their pups have it?
