Tinnatus and Hearing Aids ?

Yeah, I know. About as off beat a question as we've ever had raised here. But it's what ye do, isn't it; Ask ye mates.

Anyway, it's seriously doing my f*cking head in now. I have to be a passanger in a motor at least twice a week. Usually being driven by a stranger. And that stranger will like to make conversation. K?

Me? F*cking DC 10 whistling in my right ear! So I'm for ever craning my neck round to look at the back seat and yelling, " Eh? Sorry? " or else simply missing what ever the f*ck they just said and sitting there, in embarressed silence, hoping to god it was rhetorical :(

Sooooo ..... Figured it's about time I looked into a Hearing Aid. (My god, yes! Ye Know ye near dead when ye actually start wanting one of those things! All that's left then is to start shitting myself. Develope the smell of cabbage and die! :icon_eek: )

Anyway, what's to know about them? Anything? And I'm figuring that, as this tinnatus is inside my head, as opposed to coming at me from my stereo speakers, that a Hearing Aid should be able to amplify external sounds, without just turning up the volume of this jet liner?

Anyone know shit?

Your better off going to your GP, and being refer to someone who specialises in it Ditchy rather than just buying one of these miracle hearing aids you never see anyone wearing

I havent the foggiest if it will help drown out the tinnatus? But the lodgic says it should :hmm:

My old dad got one, he could'nt believe how much he had'nt been able to hear previously. And he doesnt smell of wee and cabbages......yet :D

Best route is via your GP. The NHS do some pretty good ones for free.

If you don't like what you get you can always go private later. Might as well try the free stuff first.

SHOULD HAVE SHOUTED YOU DEAF :censored:

Real pisser eh. :( , not bad, but enough to annoy.

I get it me left lug and have been told that nothing can be done and that prevention is better than cure.

Someone , i can't remember who, reckons hypnosis is the answer and that you learn to " not here " the noise.

Similar problem here ditchy, too much use of a shotgun without hearing protection, now its 2 shots max and i have to put the thing down, then spend the next week saying "eh?", "what?"

Mind you, what most people say to me, i would rather not hear anyway  usualy its "get off your arse you lazy fecker..."

I'm lucky, if you can call it that, as my tinnitus manifests itself as a low drone, like hearing a low geared lorry down the road a bit.

Like Molly and co said, get thee to a medical practioner. You will then probably be referred to a specialist who will rob you of all your money.

As its already been said get yourself over to the docs. I do know some people use low levels of white noise to counteract the tinnatus they have. Im sure there is something you can buy for this but i would wait till the doc has checked you over

I've had quite bad tinitus for 20+ years, started in the slaughterhouse with all of the metal on metal noise.Mine is a jet type noise as well as yours.I seem to be able to ignore it most of the time until,I get reminded of it and then it's like a whistle going off in my ear.I have also heard about low level white noise helping, and,I think it is done with the help of some kind of hearing aid that produces the noise.I'm not sure that it will help you hear better though. Please let us know how you get on,as there seems to be quite a few of us,all scared to go to the quacks. :D

Ditch,

Go to your GP and get one off the NHS!!!!

My father paid over £1000 for the "Hidden Hearing" Digital ones, and they were crap from day 1!!!! :icon_eek:

Eventually he went to his GP and got ones off the NHS, and they really work. Normally your free to pop into your nearest hospital too, for free batteries and repairs.

They even gave him a little DIY course so he can change the little plastic tubes on them himself :yes:

Hes been wearing them now for about 7 yrs!!

He went back last week as one was faulty, and they are now giving him new digital ones for free!! They are basically programmed by a computer from the results of your hearing test

As for the Tinnatus, someone I worked with suffered from this. After being fitted with NHS hearing aids it drastically improved his problem!!!Swears once he had them fitted the Tinnatus was not even an issue :icon_eek:

Had tinnitus for years now too... from rushing water to a constant whistle to like a high pitched scream.

One of the unknown benefits of 19years working in computer rooms.

My GP said there are things that can be put in your ears that make another noise which counteracts the noise you hear.

Didn't refer me to a specialist though... that was as far as he got

the other thing some folk do is (as has been said ) 'learn' not to hear it.

Gotta do something soon I think.. this year it's really started to drive me nuts :(

DS i think what you need is a device known as white noise generator, what this does is produce a tone to

mask or overide the tinnitus sounds, sort of drowns out the tinnitus,i don't think you need a hearing aid

unless hearing tests have proved you have lost some percentage of hearing, other things that may reduce

the tinnitus could be do with a change of diet(not sure definitelyjust a theory of mine)i think tinnitus can be

related to blood pressure,so may be some research in the complimentary/alternative therapy side of things

might produce some info, all the best,

Higgins.

:icon_eek: Phenominal response! I never expected anything like this!

Ok. Go to my GP? Ok, I will do ~ in due course. I won't bother to bore anyone with pointless details, but I'd need to get a medical card first. That's likely to be some time away. But, once I have, I'll go see a Doc. See if I can get sorted out with a hearing aid.

No one need worry that I'd A/ Spend money on anything out of the back of a paper or B/ Would be in the least bit fazed about wearing a traditional thing, like a plastic box behind my ear and a plastic shield inside it. Frankly, I'd find it less bothersome to have " Deaf C*** " tattooed in red across my forhead than to be like this.

For my fellow sufferers: Isn't it a f*cking Bitch?! Scary thing is, I'm reasonably sure I got mine from seven years at the Royal Mail. I wore a walkman for eight hours a day. Thing is though, I was only listening to Radio 4 at conversational level! God help these vacuous kids who so clearly emminate " Tish, tish tish! " as they go along! Like living in a disco ~ till one would need to speak to them at disco volume, just so they knew ye'd spoke, eh?

Actually; I went for a full on hearing test years ago. Proper job in a hospital laboratory. I remember the girl asking me to Please come back for another as they'd like to keep tabs on what was happening with me. Then shit happened and I never did. I'd imagine I went for that test once I realised I was losing my ability to hear certain birds calls. Anyway .....

White noise? Got that already, thanks. Oh, and I justr blocked off my good ear. Couldn't hear a f*cking thing!

I've long since checked this out on line too: Really nothing they can do about it. Doubt they'll ever suss it either. In the great scheme of medical science, a load of thirty something and overs with a noise in their ear's hardly ever going to be a priority, is it?
