Floyd17586 454
Morton - i agree 100 % that it is all in the breeding. I just think sometimes folk assume that any and all lurchers will better a whippet, and that just isn't true. Chart - I agree mate, although my whippet couldnt win a race to save his life :i: One of the best dogs ive ever had the pleasure of walking the land with was a rag racing 22" Barnsley bred whippety, alas it was,nt the norm,if this dog could have been replicated i may have trod a different path, possibly,i have found my pleasures in other types that produced the goods on a more reliable basis. now thats a .nice whippet mate Quote Link to post

canaliculata 28
Whippets or lurcher, find one thats been well bred and you'll go far wrong if entered right. If i had to pick i would go lurcher every time. I prefer a lurcher with a good dense waterproof coat and skin that doesn't need stitching too often. I'm not too keen on a lot of these tall whippets, i much prefer the smaller ones around 18 -20 inch, these tend to run and turn much better. Lots of pedlers in the whippet game, so be careful. 1 Quote Link to post

mally 832
I probably enjoy the whippets more than i did the lurchers i kept before them, however i think you have to put alot more into the whippets than you do lurchers to get them how you want them to be. Training can be more difficult, but if you perservere you will be repaid tenfold. Vixen my fawn bitch just lives for work the more lamping/ferreting you give her the more she wants to go!!. Chartpolski will tell you when he came to stay for a week, we were out every bloody hour either lamping, ferreting or shooting. I think we had 10 hours sleep in 7 days!! but the dogs were always keen to go out. I probably work my dogs as hard as anyone and the whippet suits me and the ground i run them on. Yes the bigger lurchers may suit other people and the land they run on, but for catching rabbits they suit me just fine.. 4 Quote Link to post

CallumDonohoe 65
i really like whippet or small whippetx type's mine do perfect for me i go out 2 or 3 nites a week in the winter and she cope's fine hardly miss a rabbit plus take up less room when in the house/car. less crap to pick up and less food to buy i feed 2 whippets and a staffy for about 4 weeks on 1 bag of £15 chudleys i also give them my left over veg meat etc great little dogs Well I can relate to what you are saying.I have had lurchers before, not into getting big numbers got a whipp that should catch enough to feed me and the dogs. Not knocking lurchers just for me a whipp is easier for me I can't see how a Whippet is easier to take care of, feed, etc, than a Lurcher ? I've got two Lurcher bitches, 23" & 29", and they take less looking after than our Mini Manchester Terrier and Chihuahua !! LOL !! Cheers. well i think whippets are easier to look after for1.i can put my three dogs in the back of my corsa to get about if i had 3 26 27 28 inch lurcher's i would need a transit van twice the fuel bill 2.if i am working late or just don't have time to walk the dogs for some reason my girlfriend easily walks my whippets which she would never be able to do with a few lurcher's 3.half the food to buy/source half the dog muck in the garden lol so i think the whippet is ideal for rabbit as it is not my job to wipe every rabbit out i see it is just a fun hobbie for me and my dogs i also think i am paying half the price to own a whippet and life is easier owning them for a few reasons i dont seem to get the hassle people with big lurchers get around my town either i also think they are very exciting to watch maybe i wont catch the few extra that a lurcher maybe would but there is not the numbers where i live so i dont need a dog that will run forever my whippet will still be good for 20 or more hard runs on rabbits not squatters chart i dont want to start an argument or anything this is just my opinion you obviously think different but i respect your thoughts Quote Link to post
