Few questions about shotgun licence

Hi I'm 15 and I am a trainee gamekeeper and I am going to apply for my shotgun certificate I am just wondering how many shotguns I am allowed to keep in my cabinet at the age of 15 and do I need a separate cabinte of my cartridges thanks Ryan

When you get your shotgun certificate its not like a FAC in that it doesnt list the guns your allowed to hold. You can buy as many shotguns as your cabinet can hold. Your firearms officer may well give you advice ie 'thats a nine gun cabinet so you can hold nine guns' or something similar, well mine did. Although I am sure people will tell you this isn't a legal requirment or binding I have generally found if your polite and tow the line with the FEO down the line it will be in your favour.

 

Mine also said if I wanted to hold more than nine guns they would want me to invest in a burglar alarm (again I know this isn't a legal requirement)

 

You don't need to hold shotgun cartridges in a safe or cabinet.

 

Word to the wise, especially as a keeper, if you do apply for your licence buy the biggest cabinet you can afford. Also buy a rifle cabinet not a shotgun cabinet I am a part time keeper (in my spare time after works!) you will need a FAC at some point for pest control.

Sorry I forgot to mention, although I am sure you know, at 15 you can have an FAC. Unfortunatley until your 18 (I think) you can't actually buy a gun or cartridges they have to be 'gifted' to you. Daft but true.

First thing join SACS its free at your age that way you are already insured before you applied for your cert and you have advice and support at the end of a phone the number is 01698 885206 tell Elspeth Joanna told you to phone

rich, the police have to assess the security of the guns. If you are in a safe area with a low crime rate then they might be happy for you to hold a lot of guns without requiring alarms. However if you are in a high crime area, then they may well insist that you have an alarm installed for a lesser number.

 

That said, it is the responsibility of the certificate holder to ensure the safety and security of the guns, so whilst the police can advise, they might be hard pushed to enforce such a requirement.

 

Of course, if you have a lot of guns, a silent, police linked alarm would help give you peace of mind.
