I dont know what shows lack but I can tell you what makes a good show ...totally unbiast judges ,good raffle prizes and show prizes ,no alcohol, decent grub ,an announcer with a bit of craic (like old

shows lack ,allround things for lurcher s to try like they used to have high jump simulated racing, obeidence trails , fetching walk at heel , sit stay , hunting oriented things , usd to be good crack

The organisers could just not bother and then all the people that Whinge about the shows can come on and whinge about not having any shows to go to, or God forbid offer to volunteer to help and keep t

we had ashow at duns the both judges worked lurchers and the terrier man for the hunt was there , so was a fair deal that at least they were working lurcher and terrier men i think , i would love to do a big lurcher terrier show like we did back in the ninties etc , in scotland ,was going organise one get guys like den to do racing, scurries dog stuff, but all to do with working etc make sure racing is like under 23 and then over 23 all dogs muzzled etc 300 yard run , etc ,terrier things like a longpipe with fox tails in it , them through they go .ferret things etc a real hunting extravaganza , even in a tent get dvd s and films for people to see what lurchers are realy are and what they do ,be good crack

thats for sure , was down at selkirk the guy showing didnt even own a lurcher or work them , i no its fun but fech ,grant c what you saying people are asking what shows lack, im giving them ideas to the things we done 15 or more years ago , what do you not get

You replied telling me racing and showing wasn't a test for dogs, ofcourse it isn't and I didn't say it was if you look I wrote quite the opposite that's what I'm saying whin you replied to me with not a lot to do with what I wrote in the first place as if I had said it was a test? When clearly I didn't if you read again youl see, suggestions are good whim that's what the lad wanted to start with, saying this and that about dogs chasing lure etc etc then going back on yourself and saying you've done it but basically it was longer I said you were contradicting yourself a bit nothin to do with testing dogs because someone races doesn't mean there digs don't work and they can do as they please none of us can judge them for that but for me personally it's not for me, your stuck in you own ways a bit whin people work dogs in different ways, your talking abou true tests for dogs etc all this diehard stuff. There will never be anything at shows that will test a dog ever , your saying about a 300 yard run you could make it 3000 yard run what would it prove? Nothing? So it can run 3000 yards but can it mark a rabbit hole? Ain't any good to me then, we all like different things this topic was started to find a bit of crack for shows not testing dogs and all the diehard dick extension patter

a good show needs plenty of differant classes as well as the normal classes things like rabbiting class beddie cross saluki cross bull cross etc but when ever i judge these i always try to pick a winning line up of what the cross is supposed to look like not something that has hardly any of the crosses traditional charataristics. also lurcher ,terrier and family dog racing plus speed jumping add a ferret show and/or racing along with the stalls and things to keep the kids occupied, and your well on the way to having a nice little show .try to get local buisnesses to sponsor a few trophies it all goes to making a better show.always found my grandkids love having their face painted so another thing to get.a class i always like judging is the poaching dog class ,as i always get them to walk off lead .jump over the fence and a few other things ,mind you when they find they have to actually do something a lot walk back out lol.anything to make the day more interesting and enjoyable to the paying public and the more there is to see and do the better the show will be .some show organisers just want and put on the minimum classes and effort and then wonder why the following year theres hardly anyone there .

the problem with shows,,,is there can be very few workers,,,willing to give a hand

its ok standing from side lines,,,if you pay £10 to £15 pound to get in ect

if terrier, lurcher racing required,,,if someone willing to put it on ,,,they will need free entry for 2/3 pll,s

high jump , long jump again 2,3 plls giving up there time ,,,for other,s enjoyment (again free entry )

ferret racing and showing again couple off folk giving up there time ,for other folks enjoyment ( again free entry)

they are the extra,s above i would like to see,,,,but those pll,s put themself out ,,,then come home to relise they get slagged off

othou ive never been slagged off for my lure driving ,,,not yet anyway lol,,,,its a thankless job,,,even when i lure drive for whippet scottish derby 10day event ,,,there,s never thanks for the lure man,,,,boo hoo i know lol but manners cost nothing,,,its about pulling togther not causing a rift between fellow dog men,,,and who wins or who loses ,,,as without the losers on the day ,there would be no winners ,,,sort off speak

i'll be the 1st then bob.............your pish on the lure :tongue2: but seriously wev'e spoken about hurdles maybe some of the wise men on here can advise on what to use and where to get good safe hurdles

Shows get taken far too serious. I enjoy going for a look and to see what people I meet from

Off here. There's a lot of good people at them but there a few who are complete knobs.

Best show I've been to was the Selkirk show, thoroughly enjoyed it.

What would I like to see?

More for the kids. Anything. Doesn't have to be a bouncy castle or anything expensive. What about a few kids slides set up to give them a bit of something to do? Ofcourse the older kids would benefit from something like ferret racing or similar.

I've always thought about the perfect dog show:

Usual classes.

Fun classes

Stuff for the kids.

Close parking

Gundog scurry

Lurcher racing

BBQ

Live music

Good stall selling kit or dog stuff

Good/whitty MC

GOOD WEATHER

I don't see why the lure can't be going all day. When your sat doing nothing, let the dog have a run? Why is it that it's always at the beginning and the end?

Chances to have fun runs, run your fat lab against your mates Rottweiler etc. Terriers, big dogs, small. Fat ones. Old betties pet corgi. You get the idea.

You may alreay be able to do this but your fighting to get to the lure and the MC should advertise when the 'fun runs' are etc go around asking if they will race their dogs for a laugh etc.

Gundog scurry, few hay bales and a makeshift fence. Done.

What about lure coursing too?

Think outside the box. Cater for everyone and advertise it so. A WORKING DOG SHOW FOR EVERYBODY INTERESTED IN WORKING DOGS. relaxed atmosphere, doesn't matter if you work your dogs or enjoy looking at Working dogs.

Hope

Somebody can make it happen. If all of the above was met. I'd travel anywhere for it!

all sounds good but you need an army of folk willing to give up their day

scone is ace but no lurchers, they say its because its basc organised but basc organised fairs down south have lurchers, glamis is going downhill badly last year next to no stalls none on fishing, no nets or net gear,( although i did get a deal on braided line from a falconry guy) no proper dog food but you could get double glazing or organise your next hols in mauritious and glamis is up there with the most expensive entry fees. with these bigger events hopefully the recession will make the organisers remember who their bread and butter punters are

I remember years ago at a local show, they had a pure bred class, so people with pure salukis, deerhounds, whippets etc etc could have somewhere to enter their dogs. All breeds in together, but at least it was somewhere for them. I think this would be a brill idea for shows

My only gripe with most shows is the time it takes them to start showing, then the length of time it takes. If the schedule says showing starts at 12pm, then try to start then and not the 1.30pm i have seen. And can they not have more rings/judging going on at the same time? For example, Rough lurchers shpwing at the same time as smooth but in different rings. Patterdales and borders at the same time but different rings. or dogs and bitches, in different rings etc?

I like to watch the best in show finale, but normally it has taken so long to get to it i have lost the will to live and gone home. The odd time i have stayed, there were very few people left to watch it

I like to see a good variety of hunting related stalls as well as a few craft stalls, I wish there was even a small beertent near the dogs show/racing

a stall I found both creepy, cool, educational recently that I think would go down well at country fairs was a beekeeping stall with live bees and honey for sale as well as free leaflets detailing beekeeping courses

I'd be able to get council barriers any time you no the plastic orange ones that would be intresting

4 rings is chaos moll first you need to find 4 judges year after year, but what if you keep a ruff and smooth lurcher? And or a Lakie and a borde, itr would be hard to watch.

I would think 4 judges would be a doddle, loads of people would be flattered to be a judge...I was even one myself many moons ago

If you keep a rough and a smooth, either choose which one you want to enter or get someone else to show it for you. It's like saying what happens if i have a terrier and a lurcher, those shows run consecutively
