The organisers could just not bother and then all the people that Whinge about the shows can come on and whinge about not having any shows to go to, or God forbid offer to volunteer to help and keep t

On the racing side of things id like to see pure saluki racing class, pure deerhounds and a pure bedlington class.. Id really enjoy seeing something different like that as a spectator

I dunno if there'd be enough deerhounds around these parts for a class of their own. Plenty bedlingtons though, I'm sure there's a few bedlington classes over the year at places, but then we're pretty close to bedlington

the problem with shows,,,is there can be very few workers,,,willing to give a hand

its ok standing from side lines,,,if you pay £10 to £15 pound to get in ect

if terrier, lurcher racing required,,,if someone willing to put it on ,,,they will need free entry for 2/3 pll,s

high jump , long jump again 2,3 plls giving up there time ,,,for other,s enjoyment (again free entry )

ferret racing and showing again couple off folk giving up there time ,for other folks enjoyment ( again free entry)

they are the extra,s above i would like to see,,,,but those pll,s put themself out ,,,then come home to relise they get slagged off

othou ive never been slagged off for my lure driving ,,,not yet anyway lol,,,,its a thankless job,,,even when i lure drive for whippet scottish derby 10day event ,,,there,s never thanks for the lure man,,,,boo hoo i know lol but manners cost nothing,,,its about pulling togther not causing a rift between fellow dog men,,,and who wins or who loses ,,,as without the losers on the day ,there would be no winners ,,,sort off speak

your crap on the lure bob lol your dog,s are too slow haha YE ASKED FOR IT

I don't think shows lack anything, as there is such a huge variety of them, from the small Hunt Shows, where costs have to be kept to an absolute minimum and it is a simple Lurcher & Terrier show; to the huge Game Fair Shows where they have all the bouncy castles, etc. There are some shows which are "family friendly" and some which cater simply for the dog men, I suppose all you can ask for at any show is good organisation, straight judging, and a fair crack of the whip !!

Cheers.

i dont go to many either blackie lol,,,but i think they play a roll now ,,,espaically if local, to bring aleast some understanding to country folk or that way off life ,,more now than ever,,even if the understanding is very little,,,,and most importantly meeting up with yer fellow dog man,,,as life,s lonely enough without being a total hermit lol

Shows are just a joke now too commercial all about making money the good old game fairs of old are now being turned into country fairs and there a embarrassment theres nothing there for hunting ,shooting guys all about clothes and garden furniture and the organizers want big buck for the pleasure of getting in

Shows get taken far too serious. I enjoy going for a look and to see what people I meet from

Off here. There's a lot of good people at them but there a few who are complete knobs.

Best show I've been to was the Selkirk show, thoroughly enjoyed it.

What would I like to see?

More for the kids. Anything. Doesn't have to be a bouncy castle or anything expensive. What about a few kids slides set up to give them a bit of something to do? Ofcourse the older kids would benefit from something like ferret racing or similar.

I've always thought about the perfect dog show:

Usual classes.

Fun classes

Stuff for the kids.

Close parking

Gundog scurry

Lurcher racing

BBQ

Live music

Good stall selling kit or dog stuff

Good/whitty MC

GOOD WEATHER

I don't see why the lure can't be going all day. When your sat doing nothing, let the dog have a run? Why is it that it's always at the beginning and the end?

Chances to have fun runs, run your fat lab against your mates Rottweiler etc. Terriers, big dogs, small. Fat ones. Old betties pet corgi. You get the idea.

You may alreay be able to do this but your fighting to get to the lure and the MC should advertise when the 'fun runs' are etc go around asking if they will race their dogs for a laugh etc.

Gundog scurry, few hay bales and a makeshift fence. Done.

What about lure coursing too?

Think outside the box. Cater for everyone and advertise it so. A WORKING DOG SHOW FOR EVERYBODY INTERESTED IN WORKING DOGS. relaxed atmosphere, doesn't matter if you work your dogs or enjoy looking at Working dogs.

Hope

Somebody can make it happen. If all of the above was met. I'd travel anywhere for it!

Ma wee boy will play out the back with his ferrets running through a pipe all day mate and he's 4 doesn't need to be older kids,

The reason lures ain't ran all day is because there probably wouldn't be a show, could just imagine watching the child handlers class then a race begins lol and seeing a dozen wains clinging on for life way lurchers dragging them towards it, racings fine for some people but I personally wouldny risk an injury same gos for a high jump etc each tae ther own but a personally wouldny dae it, the barking etc aswell that gos way the racing imagine standing at a show aw day way dugs all over the place barking like they dae at the racing

The fact of the matter is most working dogs will not chase a lure I know mine or any of the lads I work dogs with would not entertain chaseing a lure ...its only dogs that are trained to the lure that will put there all into it ...the problem with lure chaseing is you need a lot of space ....ive seen some shows where its not been thought out right and been down right dangerous ........Im not a fan of terrier raceing either its great craic for jo public to watch but 6 working terriers all intent on killing the same lure is just a recipe for disaster ...

hopefully you have a good turn out Ali im home tomorrow and will drop of some prizes this week (THANKS ARON ) but dont think I will be home for it .

Seriously, how many working terriermen would ever put their dog in the racing?

I used to help run the show at Peterborough, and for years we tried to get people interested in obedience, scurries, various jumping competitions, but relatively few people took part: the other problem being that those sort of events need more helpers than just a show ring: steward and judge.

Speed jumping is the only event that stood the test of time because it doesn't really demand a lot of the owner, in training terms that is. Dog simply runs down a fenced in alley over a few straw bales and it timed to when it crosses the finish line.

Maybe its different in different parts of the country, but I doubt there's any serious working dogs attend shows in my part of the country: more and more rescues every year (says something doesn't it!) and out and out show ponies.

very true sky cat when you see dogs with not a mark, running lures if it was there last supper ,never went to a show for over 13 years ,been to several over the last few years ,for a day out a bit of bartering ,never had a dog getting exited over a lure ,some take the racing more serous than actaul working a dog and lots dont no much about working a dog, i support the hunts even thp they are not into lurchers etc running dogs we used to go to new market many years ago was a good sho had obeidence proper racing three hundred yards lal hardy, stat staiton stag carter i met and several other lercher men as they speak down that way ,as for the younger generaitin most coulndnt train a dog ,just the way it is ,shows are made up of nowadays racing dogs, serous showing, a few rescues , and a few genuine working dogs , but far cry when it was all working dogs and racing was fun showing was fuv had a run off there with stag three times at the obeidence to get to the rabbiting thing at blair gowrie with a young dog i had, was good crack, not so much now nothing to test a dog at a show apart from running a rag for 100 yards
