Guest born to run1083
I've been going late at night on a push bike just a steady pace. Keep her routine of being nocturnal lol Started at 3 mile as she had abit of a break at end of season but now up to 7 mile eventual get her to 10-12 miles probably just before season but always with free running during the day don't believe just bike is sufficient Quote Link to post
collie/grey 238
This time of year mine just get free running, anything from half an hour upto 2 hours depending on how much time i have, once august gets here they'll be ran behind the motor of an evening every other night starting slow and build up to about 10 miles then come end of september they'll be raring to go but nothing gets them in better shape than actually working Quote Link to post

birddog 1,354
the real secret is to know your dog (dogs)........ some eat better, condition easily, some walk well others hate it, a lot depends on the feeding regime, the weather plays its part, how old are they ? (younger dogs condition easier) how are they bred? ( saluki and deerhound x's need different work from a collie x) what kind of land you hunt etc etc etc don't let them get bored, i use ball work in the park and beach depending on the time of day or weather, roadwork and massage play a big part as does the speed of the work, an hour in the woods working cover and catching ferret food does no harm, swimming is good but don't overdo it, some folk swear by bikework.........if only it was as simple as x amount of miles Quote Link to post
Country Joe 1,411
Nothing beats working, but Keeping your Dog fit works both ways, the dog naturally benefits, but so also does the owner, and with obesity on the rise this can only be a good thing. Quote Link to post
vixen 528
No idea of distance but i go running with my dogs for a good hour everyday, and depending on my shift work we go walking for a few miles after our run Quote Link to post
jessythewhippet 25
what about after a bitch has pups...... when can you start running them? Quote Link to post
derbylad1 293
What do you mean by run them....if your on about lamping then it depends how long it takes to get her fit. If your on about until you can get them free running off the lead, well its just little at a time until she fit and step it up at as the fitness comes on. Only you knows that mate...she your bitch. Little and often, little and often Quote Link to post
