Training any dog is the same: gun dog or lurcher or whatever. You first have to condition the dog to respond to a particular word or whistle. If you have got the dog as an adult and don't know how it was trained before, then start from scratch with the commands and whistles you intend to use, and NEVER change them.

If you have only just got the dog then you'll need to spend at least a month getting to know her: be really observant, see what she reacts to best. If the dog is 4 years old how long did the previous owner have her? Do you know if he was a good dog man or not? Unless you have had a thorough tuition in how she was trained and how she responded to the previous owner, and if she had good interaction with him, she may have some bad habits, 'switch offs' (where she has learned not to obey a certain command).............there could be umpteen reasons why she isn't responding to you, but it is entirely probably that she just doesn't know you, doesn't see you as someone she respects or trusts.

Dogs aren't robots: many gun dogs are sent away for training then come back to their owners who then can't do a thing with them as they've never taken the trouble to build a solid and trusting relationship with the dog.

You calling a dog is not the same as the previous owner calling the dog, everbody has different pitch, levels etc.

If it's outside then when you feed it give the recall command YOU want to use as it comes into its bowl. (it's already on its way so you cannot fail). Do that for a week or so and then just extend it. when its out playing & coming towards you just give the recall command (it's already on its way so you cannot fail). Do that a couple of times each play session, praise the dog 7 then let it continue playing.

Then once you know it knows the command you can start it in a formal setting. Sit the dog, back away a few yards & then give the recall. Do this a few times but finish by leaving it sitting and then going back to the dog. Just build, build, build.

One pip sit or hand in the air if working at distance

Two pips turn looking back for a hand signal for which direction

Three pips for a recall used a few times for urgency

Thats what i was always told
