tommydeer 2
Never posted it at the time but thought it would help kick off a trend of storys again! This was last rut, was having a lot of problems with bucks on the outside of the park fight with bucks on the inside. The result was a very buckled chain link fence, obviously the bucks on the outside here have a superior body weight to the ones on the inside. You can feed all the concentrate and silage in the world in a park but theres no substitute to wild forage, all the bramble, wheat, beans etc in the surrounding area makes a huge difference. Anyway, we had just re established the deer leaps around the perimeter. Fallow will normally parallel walk before putting antler to antler so it was hoped that they would use the leaps at some point during the rut. It worked a treat and 5/6 bucks entered, all were shot as they would only stress themselves after the rut by pacing the fence up and down looking to exit but at least it saved the fence. One buck in particular was seen causing a lot of damage before entering, when we finally caught up with him i thought i got a good look at him, missing a trez tine and lacking palm so was shot, getting up to him was a different story! Bigger body, bigger antlers, more character than what i had seen through binoculars, sure his one side was poor but on balance it was a lovely head with plenty of character, especially the basal snags some 6 inches long going backwards, quite unusual on fallow. Still, it was needing to come out as the introduction of new blood in the coming months meant all other males were to go. This is merely a baby compared to what is expected! Quote Link to post
Yokel Matt 918
A baby hey... Strewth. I'll bet when they tangle with each other it's a sight to see; poor fence! Interesting about the body weights - never would have thought that would be the case but thats shows my ignorance more than anything. Don't seem to get many fallow round here sadly although i've heard population pockets are about. Bet you've got plenty of coat hanging space on your wall!
