Is the (Non-Ped) Whippet a Lurcher ?

I've been following the argument amongst "Lurcher" racers complaining about Non-Ped Whippets competing in, ( and usualy winning), Lurcher Races. I was given some old CMW's and there was an article about the great racer and stud dog "Bilko", claiming he had Staffordshire Bull Terrier in him, which I wouldn't doubt, as I had two pups from his breedind that could pass for "Bull X's" ! When Bilko was put to the prolific brood bitch "Young Lucy", the prodgeny, Red Baron, Warlord, etc, were some of the fastest ever ! Young Lucy was a Whippet x Collie/Greyhound, so these dogs were Bull/Whippet x Whippet/Collie/Greyhound: you couldn't get more "Lurcher" than that !! LOL !! Just about ALL modern Non-Peds can trace their bloodlines back to the likes of Bilko and Blue Peter, so because of the breeding of best to best, fastest to fastest we've come from these Lurcher beginnings to these flying machines we have today ! Food for though, next time someone complains about "Non-Peds" racing against "Lurchers" !!

Seen a fair few Bilko blooded dogs Charti,...and yes, technically,.. ..they were lurchers, running dogs, whatever,...BUT,..in my opinion,..the lurcher RACING that we see today at the various country shows, is a comical sight and stars flight away, from dog racing proper.

I still have good old pals, that own Racing Champions,..some even have Supreme Racing Champions,..and for them to turn up at a lurcher show, and run their purpose bred speedsters against the shaggy Smithfield and the Deerhound x Collie whatever,.over a few hundred yards,..simply to win a silly plastic trophy, would seem a fairly hollow victory...

 

Far better to get in the ring, with someone who can punch back,....

 

Anyway,..it is not my scene,..my lazy old curs can only run fast enough, to keep themselves warm,...a bit like me,..

Surely it is a 'long dog', being a cross bred running dog with only sight hound blood? In the traditional 'non ped' sense. But then nearly all greyhounds have bull blood, so you could say they are all lurchers as well.

 

I think what gets most folk, is when you have a lurcher racing event at a working lurcher show, for a bit of fun, and then you get the folk turning up with their specially bred race dogs, bred purely for racing, and they always win, it's just a cowardly victory in my opinion. I want to see all kinds of proper working lurchers racing against each other, it's meant to be good fun.

I'm playing "devils advocate" lads ! LOL ! I don't think that Non-Peds and unregistered Greyhounds should race against Lurchers at the shows, If they want all - out race dogs, they should run them on the track, out of traps !

Aye, it kind of spoils it a bit, as then other folk dont bother entering their lurchers as there is no point in doing so.

 

I've been to a few shows recently and it's all a farse, most of the time. I usually take the whippet rather than leaving him in the kennel. The whippet class is usually the biggest of the day, and everyone there tells you their dogs is a worker, but im not sure how one family can work 12 whippets Same dogs always win, those that can stand prettiest, and look shiney. Quite a few times i've been the only one, or one of the only ones, in the ring that isn't part of the same family, that drive all over the country all summer collecting rosettes. If you are into showing dogs, and not working them, go to crufts, and leave the working shows, for lads who want to have a bit of fun in the summer!

And personally, if any dog that had undergone a few seasons mouching, net guarding, pheasant pegging or deer pulling, still wanted to chase a 'Fairy Liquid ' bottle dragged along a race track, amidst a bunch of screaming , half wit jukels, well, I would feel a tad disappointed ...

 

But, each to their fecking own....

Im inclined to agree with you chalky, but it's kind of a nice idea, to have a few lads of similar mind set, checking out each other dogs, with some one half respected, passing their eye over them, and then seeing whose will chase the fox brush fastest etc. Beats sitting on the couch, but falls far behind, going for an actual walk with the dogs.

As the title says a non pedigree whippet is exactly that a non pedigree but it is still a whippet I have a blue whippet bitch from working stock she is 17 tts so what would she be classed a s a lurcher. as for grehounds having bull blood it was crossed out so long ago so if you take the ratios that people use 5/8 x 3/8 etc then the cross out would be after 7 generations wouldnt it ?all though genetically it could be open to speculation.
