Get yourself some hermit crabs, best bait for hounds, not much else but they seem to prefer them to peelers.

used to boat fish a few times a month but not been for roughly 10 years so looking forward to this session. my friend told me smoothys run like a goodun but ive landed numerous carp over 20lb with ea

No mate that was welsh power that was a beast na we nailed the cod last year had a really good day on the boat earth your in mate I'll let everyone now atb donk

8lb is nowhere near enough for hounds-they are more than capable of ripping your rod from the rest and taking it for a swim. I would suggest you need 15lb as an absolute minimum and don't forget a shock leader as well. Snoods need to be 25lb minimum and crab is usually the killer bait.

I am not sure of the mark but on the lincs coast where I have targeted them you need big casts 150yds plus to reach them, so your carp gear is gonna struggle with 150g of lead and a big bait. Hopefully you don't need the distance where you are going. Just don't leave your rod unattended!

Hounds do not make for good eating, in my personal opinion it is a shame to kill them. They out up a hell of a fight when hooked, even the small ones.

8lb sounds a bit light to me mate. Don't forget you'll be needing a heavier weight for the sea and I wouldn't like to cast out a bait on line that light. If you haven't got an alternative, I'd seriously consider putting a heavier shock leader on the end of it. Double the length of the rod and a few turns round the reel. This will give your main line a bit of protection while casting at least.

It's alot to do with the fact you will be fishing a rocky or pebble mark earth it'll rub through 8 lb line in no time and even the skin is pretty abrasive and as said you might have to get some distance but crab is killer usually for them anyway good lock atb chris

I wouldn't say more of a fight than a big carp, different scrap and more powerful runs. I would say a 5lb hound will scrap like a 20lb carp - but then I don't fish for carp and have only had 2 over 20lb.

If you can I would seriously suggest emptying a spool and filling the bait runner with 15-18lb mono and then a shock leader of at least 60lbs on the end of that. It would be a real shame to get a good run out of one and as soon as you tighten up 8lb line goes.

The problem also is that beach fishing with a fixed spool you will have to have the drag tightened right up because otherwise when you can a heavy lead and bait, the spool will slip - so try to remember after you can cast and put the rod in the rest to slacken it off again.

Bait runner mode will probably not be of use if the tide moves much as it will take line and you will end up with too much slack.

Good luck!

The shock leader goes between that and your main line.:thumbs:

Never caught any smoothies myself, but i know doggies love 'em! I had a sackful of them my mate gave me off a whelk boat and I took a bucket full which I had left out for a few days. :bad: They were stinking but I've never had a better doggie bashing session than I had that night. :good:

Wife was quite annoyed about the smell in her car afterwards though!

I have heard of a few people taking there carp or pike gear down the beach and catching a few, they can't cast 5-6oz lead's, but can get a 3-4oz lead a long way and i think with the tide moving it around, it cover's more ground, and they do alright, it would be better with the proper tackle but if you only go every blue moon, why spend money.

my friend told me smoothys run like a goodun but ive landed numerous carp over 20lb with ease in river, canal and still waters on 8lb line and never seen the need for stronger line as ive always thought its the rod test curve and the mannerism as to how they are played. IF i hook a good hound and it decides to run out to sea, looks like il be following it and i hate the thought of leaving any tackle connected to fish.

Should they be too much, i will change from the crab bait(peeler crab) and use worm..

Doesnt bother me, its being out there, the sea air, roll up in my mouth and a few cans of the strong stuff!
