Well just where can i start. What a bunch of idiots you lot must be to have jump that hight with no platform on the other side !!! You havent a clue about dog welfare. Im so angry i will speak to your faces when i see you next and tell what i think of you ! High jumping when i remember it in England 20 years ago was done with a platform of bales of hay at the same hight as the top plank so the dog didnt have to drop down verticle like you tubes had them doing !! You should be banned from holding events if you cannot do them right !!

WHAT A BUNCH OF IDIOTS !!

firts dogs dont have plat forms in real fields and there was straw at the bottem

Hang on lad the adults are typing :tongue2: In real fields dogs dont jump up and over 8/9/10/11/12 foot walls on a regular basis, straw aint enough of a cushion on wrists and pasterns........

deer fences

hahaha

Seen a few deer fences, but never one that tall lol

deer fences are 8 foot

So 8, not 9/10/11/12? And funnily enough i dont ask mine to jump them regularly in summer heat when the ground is like bell iron......

Just stop, is that my wrist slapped? I agree folk take showing/racing far too seriously, and a high jump is something different and i enjoy watching it to be honest. I still stand by my original comments, there should of been a platform on the other side as landing from height on summer earth that is as hard as bell iron puts a dog at huge risk of damaging wrists and pasterns, who wants a damaged dog potentially laid up when the season starts because it took part in a jumping competition? I also think perhaps the op should of had a friendly word with the organisers and suggested a landing ramp rather than saying nothing and typing it on here......

used to compete regular in the early days at differant shows putting on the high jump and some did have bales built up other side and some didnt ,but deer fence comments i have seen them very high and tbh never had a dog go over them over and over the same day /night any dog landing from that height on hard summer ground on a semi regular basis is asking for feet ,tendon or muscle prob;lems .imo.is risking itself bigtime

This is actually one of the best discussions I have seen on this forum where both sides make good points. I had hoped to see this event at Moira - not to copy it - I hasten to add we applaud events which add new features and new competitions rather than try to copy them. And I did think it was good for the terrier & lurcher fraternity that Ian introduced a range of new events at Moira.

However I too was surprised there was not a better landing area for the dogs and Bluebell's excellent photograph of the black dog coming down illustrates that a dog could have been injured . Some dogs are so game or keen to please their owners that they will take heights that they would not be asked to take in normal sporting activity but I think it is sensible to try to avoid over testing them especially at public events. Yes dogs do jump deer fences, I had a couple who did, and shot over a setter ( not mine) who could take them quite easily BUT with deer fences the dog generally chooses its take off and can see where they are going to land on the other side and thus prepare themselves for landing. They can decide whether to jump or not. This looked more of the nature of a 'scale' not jump where the dog's focus was to get over it without considering landing.

However all arguments apart, it looked a good event, Ian, which caught the imagination and I am sure you will have taken the safety considerations on board and it will be a better, safer event next year.

Firstly, no one held a gun to anyone’s head and made them enter their dog!! The jump wasn't hidden and everyone was quite able to see the set up before entering their dog.

Also, hay was added as the jump progressed in height, no matter what anyone says it did break the fall compared to landing just on the ground. And proved to do the job as none of the dogs were injured. Possibly few tweaks may be added next year to improve but it would be a lot more beneficial to give constructive criticism (in the likes of a P.M) rather than starting a whole debate slagging and making dicks out of yourselves.

It was as good a show as any other, with a little extra variety added (enjoyed by all those there, regardless what anyone says on this). People seem to forget that a show is only ever going to be as good as the people who support them. The ''select few'' that make things awkward for others need to catch themselves on and grow up!!

Hi folks, all your constructive criticism / points on how we can improve the high jump event for next year have been taken on board

and will implemented into next years high jump event, after all it was the first year this event has taken place at Moira Game Fair

but will not be the last and hopefully will grow year after year into a more popular event in years to come.

Many Thanks Ian

Nice one mate, i think its hard running a show, they do a great job of highlighting our sport and bringing folk together. And i think the high jump is something interesting and different, as i said originally, perhaps if the op had mentioned something at the time this thread would of been null and void, but such is life

The hay was not in sight in the first pictures .You jump head first onto a drop of hay spread on the hard ground There is a picture of one dog scaling the fence and another dog jumping towards the one scaling the fence what is that about? .In present times there is quite alot of people who are opposed to lurcher folk and their exploits this could only lead to bad publicity

None the less it was a super show, well done to the lads, Ian how many dogs turned up on the day, I lost count of the number of dogs on the ground, you have set very high standards regarding the quality of dogs that were on show, look forward to next year.

A TRIBUTE TO THE LATE JIMMY SCOTT, A TOP DOGGIE MAN IN OUR COUNTRY SPORTS FRATERNITY, WHO LEFT THIS WORLD ON Christmas Day.   I Am Free Do not grieve for me now my friends and family, I am free. I am following the path God Laid for me. I took his hand when I heard him call, I turned my back and left it all.   I could not stay another day to show, to live , to hunt, to fish or play. I found my peace at close of day. Be not burdened with this time of sorrow I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow. Perhaps my time seemed all to brief. Do not lengthen it now with undue grief.   Lift up your hearts my friends and share with me. God wanted me now, He set me free.   From all in Country Sports Margaret Mc Stay

The Combined Clubs Dog Show and Northern Ireland Champion of Champions Saturday 7thSeptember 24
Laurencetown is famous for its green fields, ancient buildings, walled gardens and extensive lawns stretching down to the River Bann. But as well as these famous landmarks, Laurencetown can add another string to its bow by adding the annual Combined Clubs Dog Show and Northern Ireland Champion of Champions to its attractions and venue.
Saturday was one of the warmest days of the year with the sun shinning down continuously. I got burned alive but all well worth it. Our Country Sportsmen, women and children came out to this now annual dog show to enjoy the last days of the summer sunshine.
Our summer Dog shows have become canine excursions from all parts of the country North and South of the Border. Saturday was no exception with a good turnout of Terriers, Lurchers, Whippets and Strong dogs.
And wait for it, the big surprise of the day and what a pleasant surprise that was. The McGrath Racing Club arrived unexpectedly for a family day out to support the show. And guess what they acted on the spot with an impromptu few races to the joy of many of the racing fraternity at the show.
The childrens handling class was first on the list and judged by Marian Cree. What a turnout of children in the ring on Saturday. I can still see the smile on Clodagh Gentle face on winning 1st with her   Whippet Clive. These young boys and girls are our sportsmen and women of tomorrow. I have no doubt in my mind that these little people will carry on the sport after our day. Well done Marian and congratulations to all.
