I've stayed away from this thread, not wanting to add fuel to a blithering fire, but the quote is incorrect. I never said a dog SHOULD take a fox blah blah. I would never say how a dog should take fo

I got a good recipe for flapjacks out of the CMW once, if anyone wants it PM me for details..........................

I agree completely mate. If a dog isnt right penny will spot it and put it right. The knuckle dragging prick who started this thread and the last one very often "advises" people to either cull or dump

A lad on here (a few years ago) had something like this as his signature..

"It used to be that books were written by the few and read by the many, now they are written by the many and read by the few.

This rings a bell with me. I used to get the Countrymans weekly, used to read it asap and then and again. I still got hundreds from the 90's in a mates barn. But the articles in their are written more for the dollar than the actual love of the game, there used to be the one off author of an article or the one that your see once in a blue moon, these are more likely to be written for the love of the game.

I used to subscribe to EDRD & for years it was a great read, so good I got all the earlier ones id missed, I dont think they paid for articles and it should in the quality of what you would read. I stopped subscribing as it seemed as if a few people seemed to be writing about what they had for breakfast.

I'm not a fox man as I said but here is a question to those who are.

If when legal you went out to purposely target the fox and you had the choice of using big strong dog or a small lighter dog. Do you consider the speed at which the kill is carried out and limiting the damage inflicted to the Lurcher in the process.?

Do you not owe it to the pray to use the dog that will have the size to end the job quickly?

We know a small dog can do it, just the same that a .22 bullet rifle " can " cleanly fell a large fallow deer, but It can also cause wounding and suffering. So you by law need to use a bigger more suitable calibre rifle that is designed to have the power to carry out a cleaner kill?

i remember being at a gamefair when they were handing the very first edition of the shooting news as it was then called out like confetti i read every bit before i got home and went straight down the paper shop on the monday to order it weekly very good paper /magazine for the lurcher terrier lot in them days and worth every penny and more of the cost.i subscribed to earth dog running dog for years and wrote articles in there but that to is not anywhere near the calibre or quality that it was years ago either.oh for the days of the early shooting news and edrd times ,mind you i could and did get out a lot lot more then and tbh a lot faster as well .as the famous words in a record say TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGING .and mostly not for the better imo.

So how do we encourage people to try their hand at an article or two? We need some new blood and with all the will in the world (with the possible exception of Mr Harcombe), people aren't as prolific as time goes on and their lives and obligations / priorities change. There are some very good writers for EDRD (I can't comment on CMW as I don't get it), but we need a situation where new writers are stepping up to keep things healthy.
