Help a fella out

Hi all. As you can tell by my post count I am new to this forum and new to the sport altogether. I was just looking for a bit of advice as to how I would go about getting into hunting. Last week I bought myself a Webley Stingray XS from my local gun dealers and have enjoyed shooting away at targets (about 20 yards away) in my back garden. I realise I am not ready to go hunting yet nor do I want to before I know I can Give a good clean kill with every shot but I just wanted to know how I would go about getting into the sport as I dont have any other friends who do it and do not know anyone who owns a farm/ has land. I was also wondering what your thoughts were on the gun I have purchased. Any advise would be much appreciated.

1) Get insurance. It shows you care. If you are shooting and hit Fido the wonder mutt, Dobbin the super donkey or Mr Bigglesworth, then your backside is covered.

 

2) Practise makes perfect, get it so you can get a group of 10 shots inside a 10p piece (where you were aiming at as well).

 

3) Make sure you know what you can shoot, legally and what you are allowed to shoot on your permission. It can vary. It is perfectly legal to shoot pheasants with an air rifle. However your permission holder might not want you to!

 

4) Yell and Google. Google farmers, nurseries (the sorts with plants not kids), golf courses, stately homes, places you know will have a large amount of land and get on the phone. If they say no ask if they know of someone who has a problem. Then you ring that person and say the person who referred you told you to phone. So say you phone up Jones and ones says no, but knows Smith has a problem. Ring up smith and say that Jones has referred you, Makes it more attractive to Smith then.

 

5) Keep them informed. If you see anything wrong on their land or anybody on it who should not be there. Tell them. You act as their eyes and ears!

 

6) Treat them nice! At Christmas a bottle always goes down well, a fiull one goes down even better though. Invest a bottle in your permission and it can pay dividends!

As for the Stingray, you do realise that you have just purchased a very expensive Hatsan 55 or 60S don't you? They are the same gun, just a different stock. You have a nice gun though. German barrel, Swedish spring (Power Lok), very nice trigger too!

Cheers Mike av just learned alot more than i knew 5 minutes ago because of them six sentances, is there any particular insurer you reccommend? looks like this will be coming out my next pay packet haha. Thanks for the gun feedback as well, glad it's a good'n, not so glad I could of saved me self a few bob, oh well, you live and learn.

LG the best insurance would be with either BASC or Countryside Alliance...BASC can be found here http://www.basc.org.uk/ And Countryside Alliance here http://www.countrysi...uk/ca/insurance Other companys also do insurance but those 2 are the best

I know what you mean, I did the same damned thing last year, so I know they are the same weapon! They are nice guns though, good to 35 metres! Just make sure you feed it decent ammo, if it says SMK on the tin lob it! SMK pellets are good at not going where you aimed them, the flight is somewhat unpredictable. They seem to be stamped out using a die made of plasticine!

 

Use a reasonable pellet! A poor gun will shoot better with good ammo, a great gun will shoot poorly with bad ammo!

I got some Webley Accupells thrown in when I bought the gun but they've been used. Got some RWS superdomes yesterday and they seem better so i'll stick with these for now.
