Confusing dead muntjac

Recommended Posts

I don't usually make a habit of taking photos of dead animals, but this one has really confused me. I can't make heads or tails of how the clustercuss this muntjack got like this. This was in a nature reserve, was fairly high off the ground and there were no other remains nearby at all so I am stumped, any ideas? Is it possible it jumped and got trapped by the leg? It must have been there for a long time, let me know if anyone wants a muntjack skull and I will go back in a few weeks when its clean

I did think about it but didn't want to steal his thunder!

I expect someone put it there.

Was its back leg still there? If I was on the wind up I would say leopard had dragged it up the tree to eat, as they do but cant see that little branch supporting it's weight even if there was an abu

How big was the branch that it was hung from is it the one you can see in the middle pic thats about 5cm diameter?

Yes, that sounds about right. Sorry the pictures aren't very good I just took a few quick pics on my phone, but it did look snagged by the leg but it is hard to tell since it is so haggard looking.

It is weird, how far up was it, looks like someone has caught it and hung it to come back for it or else if the back leg was not there gralloched and cut head off to save weight and slung it in tree

Its not a young one either by the look of its horns. I've found muntjack stuck on wire fences where they've tried to jump, then somehow got a foot twisted between the top two strands of wire: a nasty situation. Found one dead, and another horribly injured with its hind feet almost severed from what was probably that situation: gangrenous. :bad:

If it wasn't high up could it have jumped for some reason and got its foot hooked between branches?

It was about 5' - 5 1/2' up so I think it could have jumped it, but how or why that would have happened I have no idea. I suppose it being shot and left is likely, but it being quite a popular dog walking spot and a quite well managed little nature reserve they must be unbelievably stupid to leave the evidence hanging...well maybe not that hard to believe really. It still strikes me as weirder than that though due to the leg being tangled and it wasn't hanging from a prime gutting spot by any means.

Maybe it was found by someone's dog and to stop them going back they put it out of reach? or what was left of it anyway.

I will head back on Sunday and scavenge the head, I have never cleaned a skull though so it could be interesting, going well I would be happy to post it

Perhaps someone could've just found the remains and hung them up there out of the reach of their Dog........ Or on the other hand have you not seen the film 'PREDATOR'?................

Well it'd be a change from big Cats being blamed! :whistling:
