Millet 4,497
did a bad thing to day taped her on the bum as she chewed my shoes. That's a bad move realy especialy with a nervy pup and you could cause irreparable mental damage if you keep doing it..just keep calm and be patient.. ..and also pick anything up and put it out of the pup's reach what you don't want chewing up.. J.DOG 1,355
At five months I wouldn't want my pup running any real bunnies it cam ruin a dog , just keep improving on your bond with the pup , it sounds like your doing well and sounds like the pups coming on great , take your time don't rush her onto the real thing , If she's dropping short , at home play tug of war with her and after a minute of playing as she pulls let go and place your arms behind your back this will encourage the pup to give you the toy to play again say hold then play tug again and so on after that when you let go of the toy and say hold increase the amount of time she's holding it say start off at 3 seconds then increase slowly once she gets the idea play tug then throw the toy say 10 ft and let her retrieve it when she comes back place your arms behind your back and say hold then play tug again at the end of the game give a food treat . This worked for a friend of mine over a period of weeks . Atb mate JD 1 Quote Link to post
beast 1,884
there is some good advice from blackmaggie and j dog. try to stay away from bunnies for now, if she runs any they will probably escape and she will get frustrated and lose confidence. she may end up yapping at them, or she may end up not bothering at all as she knows she can't catch them, and will stay this way even when she is an adult 1 Quote Link to post
shropshire-lad 9
Ok lads she is dropping short, some time she will hold the bull of fur, but if its a dead rabbit that i have for the ferret out the back, then she will drop it short. I will keep on playing with her the last thing i wont is to be with a dog that wont work, as i would not be able to let her go if she dont work. when out and got some more farm land for here when she is ready in 10 - 11 months Quote Link to post
skycat 6,173
She is a young pup, and dropping short is a sign that she isn't confident holding something when she is near you. You need to build on trust and confidence before getting on with serious training. I don't do any training as such, but I play games which are designed to build a bond between me and the pup: forget about making her behave like a perfectly trained adult dog, and give her a chance to express herself freely. Let her jump up at you, lots of cuddles, roll around on the floor with her gently: all these sort of things will encourage her to feel good about being in your space: there's plenty of time to get the serious training into her when she's a bit older, though to be honest, in my world there is no such thing as 'serious' training. Everything should be fun and energetic for young dogs. I've sent you a pm. Quote Link to post

BORDERSCOT 3,816
Hey mate - I really hope all works out with the pup. However, you are asking for advice and on the whole the advice is sound and sensible but you then seem to be ignoring it a little and doing your own thing. It's your pup so it's your call at the end of the day. You've had it little more then a week and despite suggestions that you spend that time getting its confidence, lead training etc - you've had it off the lead, smacked it and have introduced it to a fur dummy and have it amongst rabbits. To be honest mate I can see disaster written all over the place here. I hope I'm wrong and may well be. But having it amongst rabbits at 4/5 months old is just asking for trouble and if you keep this up you'll be passing it on to someone else with the 'ready to start' tag in a few months time and by the time it's two years old it'll be in its 6th home. Slow things down mate and please don't take this as anything other than constructive criticism. Hope it all works out. Quote Link to post
