I've had one, and i have her daughter right here at my feet. Neither world beaters, but both filled the bag well for me, however, personally i'd never have another. If you want a first cross collie/grey then you know thats what you'll get from hancock. But parents are not proven(actually never get any work) and they're not socialised, so do end up up with a dog that has issues. But thats not every dog.

Go to someone, (plenty of them about) that has a litter from proven parents and have had a better start in life.

I personally know of 2 lads that have owner bred Border bred lurchers,1/2 and 3/4 bred,non Hancock,ones in Stanbury,w.yorks,ones in Skipton,n.yorks.Unfortunately they only rarely breed,not in it for the dollar.There will be many others,its a case of doing some homework or taking the easier option.I have little interest in breeding a Border cross again,but,ive been noting the progress of a Border dog over the last 3 years,worked 7 days a week on a farm,the dog never ceases to amaze me with its work ethic and sheer determination,it stands at about 24" and oozes class and quality,it may possibly never come to anything,but if ever a dog was born to further a line of Collie bred lurchers,well?.

If you are looking for one now and can't find anything suitable, I would take a look at a Hancock. Personally I think some of the border half crosses in particular look fine, in fact some look great. There have been many good working Hancock's over the years and you will know exactly what you are getting. The do take some pride in what they do and even though I personally have a bit of difficulty with the ethics of commercial dog breeding I think they offer decent collie lurchers. My freind has a lovely 5/8ths 3/8ths beardie border pup and she is coming along fine, is well put together physically, has plenty of natural hunting instinct, is learning and socialising well and will undoubtably be a good worker in a couple of seasons.

i seen a few, an only 1 i rated, he was a beardie x an im sure he was 3/8ths, id have to ask, he was an old dog by time i seen him, but i know he was a good un all his life..

I personally wouldnt go to him, but like has been said, with all that are bred, some will be very good, many average and some very poor. If you are after a genuine first x, t the end of the day you are unlikely to get one out of a working grey and hunting collie anyway, so the collies and greys he uses are probably as good as owt else about. But it just doesnt sit right with me, the way it's all done.

 

Having said that, i've spent a long time trying to find a decent collie lurcher pup for myself and i'm still searching, they are like hens teeth, because every fecker just goes to hancock, and those that have lines of their own keep them close and breed rarely.

 

What i don't get is, if hancock produces so many dogs, and so many of them are good (as we are told on here), then why have i only ever met one dog, that was bred out of two dogs from hancocks kennels that were then tested hard, found to be top, and mated???

Cheers bud, he has filled out nicely and is quick, faster than I expected even, so hopefully this year will see him do good. He`s clever enough for sure.
