carp777 191
An interesting topic !! now I've never been to Ireland so i can't comment on the coursing over there !! but I've coursed plenty on the fen's, In my opinion a "class" dog has to be the complete package !! i'e speed, stamina and a good mouth and a brain !!! I've seen plenty of dog's with enough of one or two of these quality's but lacking the other's, they will catch hare's but are not "class" !!. Now without trying to be "controversial" SIX minute's is a long time even on the fen's !! In my experience a 31/2 to perhaps 5 minute's is probably about "average" on the fen throughout a season, quite a lot of fen hares are piped or lost around farmyard's e.t.c before six minute's !!! don't get me wrong I've seen plenty of six or even seven minute courses over the year's but over the year's being the operative word !!! Again in my opinion a class dog should "rarely" have to run a hare for more than five minute's!! like Gorger, Adel told me Roscoe was never the same dog after that eleven minute run, and I'm not surprised !! although i admired the dog for having the "grit" to stay on after his hare he was never really pushing his hare. he more or less run it til it couldn't run anymore !!! but fair play to the dog. Myself i preferred the dog to do the business at the earliest opportunity whether that's one minute or even five, some hare's can't be caught in two or three minute's no matter how good the dog behind it !! but after five minute's even the best of hare's are feeling the pace !! especially if the dog is still working him hard !! so to sum it up you need speed, stamina, a good mouth and a coursing brain to have a top class dog there is not as many of these about as people seem to think especially in mid winter !!!!!! 1 Link to post
KittleRox 2,147
now this is a good hare with a good bitch behind it .your whippet greyhound types dont kill these hares http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ctsay0_gpv0 aye I,ve watched the video and I must say I am impressed with the amount of stamina, however to say a grew type won,t kill these hares is a bold statement, how do you know a grew type wouldn,t have killed that hare and done it quicker, up and at them types can also run clever use the angles etc Link to post
