Dan McDonough 560
I'm new to this so take it easy on me. I've been running jagds for some time now and I train American Leopard Hounds on bobcat. I've been reading about every thing I can find on lurchers for around ten years now and have just gotten a Stag female from a friend of mine (last fall). My intent was to cross her on to my jagd stud for my first lurcher. I don't know a single person around my area that hunts with lurchers and about three people who even know what they are. I'm all alone in this and could use some info. Any experiences with this cross? I have a really sharp B.C. on deck if I'm persuaded to stay away from the jagdterrier cross. What do you all think? Dan McDonough 560
Here's something else that's got me curious...I've had excellent results on game with the jagdterriers. I also know a lot of folks that have not, but for me they have worked out pretty well. Jagds have showed me great nose, locating and will stay with the game. I've had some that will strike off of the rig (box on the truck) well and some that are fantastic tree dogs. I've not hunted with another breed of dog, to this point, that had more hunt in them. Of course, the jagds have their physical limitations due to their size and that is why I'm looking to give them what they are lacking in stature by crossing to a larger dog. I'm very suprised that there is not much mention of the breed in the lurcher talk here. I'm sure there is a reason, I just don't know what it is yet. I'm having a great time reading all of the stories on this site so thanks to all of you here. By the way, I'm in Wisconsin, USA. about 10 miles into the great Northern forests. Lot's of swamps, creeks, some farmland and lots of woods. I drive South to the bigger fields. Quote Link to post

Dan McDonough 560
Ardvark, we can hunt almost anything here as long as the season for that game is in. Mostly fox, coyotes and bobcats but I'm good with running rabbits and whatever else wants to give a race. Quote Link to post
Dan McDonough 560
Border Collie, a good working stock dog too. Quote Link to post

Dan McDonough 560
I'm getting that from reading all of the posts here also. I've been in dogs (in general) for long enough to try and start at the point where the most success has been had. There are a lot of folks who will bang their heads for quite some time hunting breeds that just aren't right for the job so I'm wide open for all suggestions. No use trying to pull a cart with square wheels. Would you prefer to cross the stag with something other than the boarder collie? Quote Link to post
Tyla 3,179
Hello Dan, if you want to go for a traditional lurcher type then go for the collie cross. If you want something with a bit more fire then try the jagd, people have been using terrier crosses, mainly bull or bedlington, here for years. I've not heard of a jadg cross here but then there are very few jagds over here. It will all depend on what kind of hunting you'll be doing and what quarry. ATB Quote Link to post
bird 9,977
well Hello Dan, if you want to go for a traditional lurcher type then go for the collie cross. ATB well as jagds are only about 16in , and a stag from 26-30in wouldnt be choise, i would go for a more natural size stud for the bitch. And that would a good male stag bred for yote's about 28-30in. A dog bred for speed, wind, guts, it will do what your hounds do but quicker. And a collie prob wont put any real fire in the pups if you went that way, Stag all the way, or even a stag with some pitin the mix , kill them bobcats for your would try to lol . 1 Quote Link to post
Dan McDonough 560
I do happen to have a collie/pit pup here but I don't know as much about the parents as I would like to. I would have liked to see them hunt but they were not hunted. It's a little bit of a shot in the dark but I can always back away from that if the pup doesn't work out. He's a sharp little guy but is awfull about wanting to put his teeth into everything. He's learning at a pretty fast clip though. He is only about 10 weeks old but is retrieving, comes when called and knows not to come over and bite me in the morning. He'll ask to go outside to do his buisiness and knows the difference between in side/ outside, upstairs/downstairs and a few other comands. He's a long ways off from being put into the project but he is an interesting carachter. Quote Link to post
