Recommended Posts

I'll get you a couple of young ferrets David as a couple of my friends jills are pregnant, I've just offered to take a lad out or I would of offered you. There is a few lads from up here on so one of them should offer you a trip or 2 to get the basics

Id offer to bring you to one of my permissions but im a bit tired of showing people how to go on then never hearing from them again, so holding off showing people the ropes for a while, im not half as experienced as some of the lads on here but i picked it up pretty well and like to think im at a stage i can give advice.

First thing is.. if I was you.. Go ferreting before you actually get ferrets, if you havnt already, it might not be for you and you will waste a lot of time and some money if you find out you dont like it.

Once you get your ferrets just focus on handeling them..A LOT.. Take the nips they give you while there kits, That will stop as long as you handle them often.

Get yourself a MK3(m) and some collars, a spade (I use a small one because theres no need to carry around a big bulky thing for ferrets imo..) and some nets.

I start to work ferrets around 7-9 month old (so.. end of the season really..) on small warrens Good chance you wont get loads of numbers till the ferrets click on what the deal is... My 2 younguns are coming up to a year soon and have not had many rabbits but showing promise and getting more confident each time I take them. It's easier if you have an older stronger ferret to send down first, incase theres anything you don't want down there (rats etc.) and the younguns will follow so going out with someone experienced will help bring them on too as well as yourself.

One thing I will tell you is make sure you look after them, they can go down hill VERY quickly so dont be afraid to ask advice if you think something is wrong, no matter how stupid it sounds... most lads(and lasses) on the forum are more than willing to give advice.

hope that helps a little bit??!!??

good luck.

what col says is very good advice get out and try it first before you contemplate getting some stinkers ferret are pretty easy comeby these days they need looking after all year round and feeding people often dont realise that a ferret can live for 10 plus years and if you dont put the effort in in the start a ferret that bites for 10 odd years isnt much fun to own
