gonetoearth 5,144
I,ll bow down on the Lisbon Lions thing as id be talking about a side i have no real knowledge of.......the simple point i was trying to make being the nature of competetive sport dictates very few athletes/teams from " yesterday " would beat their equivalents today.........in any sport.......that doesnt stop them being greats of their era. As regards Best/Pele....................Both these great players would of spent more time in the physios room than on the pitch.......Pele never played in the Spanish or Italian leagues club level so never witnessed tough tackling on a week to week basis......Likewise George Best never competed at world level in International football but did at club level....my belief is neither man was physically durable enough to consistently produce great football in todays game........players like Messi or even Maradona are/were strong physical specimens capable of grace/speed/skill......but also had physical presence.......Ronaldo being a great example for me he is one of the most complete footballers ive ever seen. No not every player needs those qualities but i think in any conversation about the worlds all time great players these are the type of players that will always come to mind.......i mean i think Julian Dicks was better than all of them but he wouldnt be on the tip of many folks tongues Never heard of Julian Dicks.....................was he a footballer?.. I think your point about athletes getting better is a very good point but i dont think that can be carried over to football as its a team sport and not an individual one. George Best never played lots of International football because he was from NI, if he was English he would have played loads. Pele i cant really speak about that much as i never even seen him play but i do think listening to others he wasn't to bad a football player....... I also think the best player in the EPL is Drogba by a country mile at the minute....if he'd just stop rolling around like a little pansy i think he would get a lot more respect. Ronaldo was the same for a few seasons.....lying on the floor more than he was on his feet. Never heard of Julian Dicks.....thats a crime, the greatest left back never to play for England......twice as good as Pearce and 3 times as hard !!......but the fa bottled it because of his reputation...........one of the cleanest strikers of a football you could ever wish to see......id love to of seen him in a penalty shoot out for England !!!!!......................Lionel Messi.....pffffff ! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zWjqUBf9z4 thought you did not drink Julian. Dicks better than physco you having a giraffe. Gnasher

Gnasher My tongue is lodged firmly in my cheek .....i also stated he was better than Messi............clearly it sailed over your nut No of course he wasnt as good as Pearce, but he wasnt far behind and certainly not far enough behind to warrant NEVER getting even 1 England cap !!!............same as the fa bottled it with Harry they bottled it with " The Terminator "...............if your not a squeaky clean character.....your not coming in.

gnasher16 30,454
you would never guess he supports united!! wonder when he last went to old trafford,,,, In all honesty i dont hold much weight in the theory that you have to go to games to be a true supporter i think thats bollocks....im no bigger fan than the next man it just so happens i love live sport and am in a position where i can go to games,no big deal it dont make my opinions or support and more valid than anyone elses.......my grievance is with those type of people who slagged us off before the competition, then started singing a few Engerland songs when we won a few games and are now back to slagging us off..............the same type of people who think because they watch a big club on the telly it gives them some kind of right to slag off top players and managers because the glory has gone missing for a year ! gonetoearth 5,144
Gnasher I've followed England A lot but could not go over this time I all ways like the lack of so called big club following the Craic is all ways good and good to meet lads from Yeovil. Bournemouth etc etc , am sick of going out on foooooking pens though lol any way next stop the blues back in Europe all be it one game in Malaga. Lol
gnasher16 30,454
I totally agree......i didnt see the games on telly but in and around the ground i never saw 1 Utd or City flag......a couple of Chelsea and Arsenal.......and maybe 1 Liverpool.........i saw literally hundreds of lower division clubs from Millwall to Grimsby.......Torquay to Norwich......all corners of the country.................the footballing knowledge some of these lads have is immense it was so refreshing to talk football with folk who have a genuine love and passion for the game thats not dictated by following success.....i really admire some of them who aint got 2 bob to rub together but its their big event......makes it all the more painful when we bail out miserably of course but thats sport for you. I was telling everyone by the law of averages we have to win a penalty shoot out this time.......................gutted.
WILF 47,584
Hands up here, as you well know I am no fan of how England play football and I didn't give them a prayer before they went....but I will eat my words and say: I was impressed with Andy Carrols work ethic and his goal was absolutely out of the top drawer The whole teams work rate I thought was very good, they played to their strengths so fair one Against Italy I can't say a bad work about them to be honest, they worked hard, tried to play football and take the game to Italy.....I thought it was a cracking game. Both teams strikers were not sharp enough and it could have easily gone either way......if I had to make a criticism, it would be that Walcott came on be didn't perform and Cole was a bit of a clown shaping up for a penalty against a keeper like Buffon like that. BUT, at least he had the balls to step up and take one and you can't knock his performance in the games. All in, they proved my expectation wrong and good for them.....
