JohnGalway 1,043
must admit hearing the fans sing it now sounds amazing and at 4-0 down aswell!!!! full respect to ireland you gave it your best shot in a real tough group I listened to Roy Keane on about what a load of ol bollocks the Irish " party attitude " is.......he said its embarrassing and time Ireland started taking the game more seriously if they want to compete in these tournaments and not try to be everyones favorite " second team "................must admit i never really liked his attitude as a player but he talks a lot of sense even when it might offended his own kind.....fair play to him he,s right in this case. Meh, I dunno, he is and he isn't. Any right thinking person knew we weren't going to get out of our group. We have bad/old players constrained by a system they can't play in when you look at the squad and results. Someone said on radio during the week that 9 of Spains players play for either Barcelona or Real Madrid while a lot of ours were relegated with Wolves mid season (an exageration but it get's the point through). Trapatoni put an extra player in our midfield to combat Spain, please, why? We can't pass the fecking ball in the first instance. We have a population of about 4 million or so, how competetive does Roy expect us to be? Go back and look at the Italia 90 Ireland squad and look at the top English teams they played for. Now go look at those top English teams now and how many have Irish, Scots, Welsh or even English playing for them compared to 1990. We don't have a domestic league that matters. What needs to happen is massive technical development from learning to walk level upwards. That doesn't happen Ireland and I'd be confident in saying when you'd compare to a lot of the top European countries that it doesn't happen in the UK either. So were does Roy expect our Vunder players to come from? Are the fans to go to Poland just to be depressed? Roy was a great player, but he's been a shit manager more than once now. Roy is the kind of guy whos right when he's right and who's more right the more wrong he is, you can't argue.

I take your point but i think what Keane was getting at,or at least the way i took it and certainly agree with is exactly the same as the Scots....you just dont seem to be producing good players anymore.....only difference being yous dont piss and moan about it the same way they do and blame everyone else You had the same population when the Arsenal and Man Utd teams were filled up with great Irish players....Jennings,Rice,O Leary,Stapleton....ive always said Liam Brady was one of the greatest British players ive ever seen.......Keane,Mcgrath,Irwin,Moran even Johnny Giles all doing the same at Utd.....................where have these type of players gone.......same with the Jocks they had some of the greatest players ever to come out of Britain..........but its almost like Ireland and Scotland the sports just not as popular in the culture anymore hence those type of players are a thing of the past....i think its a shame. By the way excuse my ignorance if some of the players i listed were north or south they were just the first ones to come into my head to make the point Edited to add.......ooops...apparently that Georgie Best wasnt a bad player either Edited June 16, 2012 by gnasher16
JohnGalway 1,043
you just dont seem to be producing good players anymorewhere have these type of players gone I don't see kids out playing football around here anymore, not that we ever produced anyone. When I was young - which wasn't when dinosaurs roamed the earth - we'd be out everyday unless it was torrential rain or a storm. I suspect they're sat on their chubby little arses playing it on XBox or playstation. I don't think there's a youth system that's worth a fcuk either, that doesn't help. Where have the good players gone? Hmm, I think a lot learned their skills on the streets. Keane said we can't go for the ould sing song. Sorry Roy, but we can. I don't get the impression that Roy does much singing. Look back at Ireland football history, we have won three things, two underage tournaments under Brian Kerr, and some mickey mouse four nation tournament that no one remembers. There are things that can be done to improve, but I think Roy is living in his own dream land, we've always been a nation that gives it a lash. Condemnation of the fans by someone who walked away from a world cup in a huff takes some neck. He has a vendetta against the FAI (who are shite), he has a vendetta against Mick McCarthy (who done well with Ireland), he has a vendetta with Alex Ferguson. The man is a ball of rage.

Malt 379
There's a turn up, I thought Russia were sure to go through after their first match, and Poland looked half decent too..
JohnGalway 1,043
I thought Russia were meant to be one of the tipped teams for the tournament. I feel a bit sad Poland are out, not just as a host nation but they've really warmed to the Irish which I find a bit humbling considering how some Irish treated the Polish who came here to work. Malt 379
Russia looked deadly in their first game, don't know what happened to them after that though.
JohnGalway 1,043
The knives are being sharpened for Trap on RTE by it's panelists, has upset players, never changes tactics, never reacts to situations... Still, always Apres Match to look forward to...
Malt 379
Keane ain't letting go of this one is he? http://www.football365.com/news/14460/7820998/Come-And-Have-A-Go... I know he is a determined bloke, installed with a ferocious winning mentality, but surely he can accept that not all players feel the same way and go about the game with the same attitude as he does? That quality was an important one when he was captain of a team challenging for honours at the highest level on a regular basis, the ability to demand the best out of those around him every time they played but I can't see how he can expect to apply that to his work as a pundit, and it certainly hasn't yet worked at any team he's managed at. He can't seem to grasp that he was part of a team of winners who sort of felt the same way and that's what sets those at the top apart from the rest as much as skills, flair and ability does. JohnGalway 1,043
Most opinion here, that I have heard, on Keane boils down to this: Go away Roy. We're bored of this ranting shit. He makes himself irrelevent precisely because of the junk in the link above Malt. The thing is, no one, not the manager, not the players, nor the fans have said no mistakes have been made, or that they have not played poorly. No one will be bothered having a go at Roy. Even Eamon Dunphy doesn't agree with Roy, and Eamon hates practically everyone!
