FUJI 17,156
Andy, the Don dog seems very usefull and i hear he is stamina packed, what made you choose a full collie rather than another dog from the line? The 1st lurcher i owned that carried Minshaw blood was the Bulpa dog,he was bred out of Blue and my mates partners Border Collie,it wasn't a worker, done nothing except be a fecking nuisance chasing cars, motorbikes you know the type? My mates mother in law had it in the field behind her house and Vic was also in there with Blue, the bitch was in season and with neither dog on a leash ..9 weeks later and there was a litter of pups ...all my mates at the time already had Minshaw bred dogs out ofNipper, Blue or his littermates but i couldn't afford one, they were making stupid money way back then ..not knowing what these could be Vic said i could have the pick of the litter for £60 so i took his hand off and payed for it without even seeing the pups ..when at 4 weeks and 4 days old Vic arrived at my house with not one but two pups! A red bitch and a red & white dog,he said i could have two? I thought fecking great ..got them settled in over a few days then he rang and said call up at 6pm and fetch the pups so i got my mate to give me a lift the 6 miles or so to his house and he said we'll take the pups to show Sandra the woman who had the Collie..he went inside with my two pups then a few minutes later walked out with this red dog which he gave me and said get yourselves away and ask no questions? He came to my house the next day and said i had payed for the pick of the litter and he said the red dog "Bulpa" was it,Sandra had promised it to her brother Hento who bred Nigger and also had the dam to Nipper who was Blue's father. So that was it,i never had no knocks on the door asking for the dog back or anything..i had my own dog sired by Blue, we as young lads sat in awe drinking tea and listening to the feats of Blue,Nipper and his exploits while out hunting ..Bulpa was without question my favourite dog that i've ever owned,he was nothing to look at,was a fecker for fighting, had me infront of the magistrates for a moggy, bit several folk..he was a bit of a b*****d in truth but in the field he was something else ..it was always an ambition to "try" and get another dog similar to him,my mate in Ireland searched and scoured the land for the "right" bitch,he had two others, one never came in season so she went back to the farmer, the second bitch got killed by the third which is now the dam to Don.The bitch that was killed my mate and his brother had to build a small barn in payment for the death of the Collie to the farmer and the Collie that produced Don & Co my mate payed 2000 Euro's to "rent" her ..she is a bitch that is used mainly on cattle,a very strong willed bitch, she will take no shit and has phenomenal drive in her something she seems to have passed onto the Don dog for sure ..she ran in the Co Wicklow sheepdog trials when the pups were only 7 weeks old and duly won and she retained her title again in 2011..with the way the hunting law is and rabbits and rats being the only legal quarry i did think he might serve a purpose of a kind for bunnies but you just never know? With his sire Jack almost towards the end of his time on this earth i thought the Don dog would also make a good baseline for breeding lurchers and i'm still very much of that thinking? I'm no spring chicken but i have 4 lads who are all dog daft and maybe the blood off Don will be in their dogs in future years? I don't think he would of killed hares to the extent Bulpa did but you just never know? Don has a touch more Collie in him then Bulpa so perhaps just lacks a wee bit of pace? A long winded answer but basically Simmo it was "hopefully" to get a dog capable of catching a few bunnies and for a good baseline to breed off in the future .ATB Andy. 6 Quote Link to post
johnny boy68 11,726
They are just lurchers like you say Whin at the end of the day..bred down from generations of useful dogs just like your own...nobody is trying to fool anyone to as and what they can and can't do..they serve a purpose to their owners and at the end of the day they only have us their owners to please? Personally I think they have been well tested over many years?..surely that is a good thing? ATB Andy And surely isn't that the point !! 2 Quote Link to post

I thought that may be the plan.....use Don as a base for a line ! As you know, I think he would be great to a Greyhound, but you may have different plans ! Whatever he's put overm best of luck with them Cheers. Quote Link to post
FUJI 17,156
Chalky a good friend of mine from Newcastle who "did" keep some very good coursing dogs told me a good few years ago something that i said would never happen to me but by feck he was right ..he said Andy,we all set off in this owld game of hunting with lurchers chasing the humble bunny and you can bet you bottom dollar thats what we will finish our hunting days doing!..i was hare daft,he was too..he now enjoys his daytime mooches with a terrier a lurcher and his catapult ... long way away from running on the Fens with his highly tuned athletes? ..me,well the long wet nights of running hares as sadly been left well behind by me and i thought i'd never see that time EVER? but now i'm EXACTLY where he said i'd be ..back where i began chasing the humble little bunny with my ugly curs..ATB Andy. 1 Quote Link to post
