FUJI 17,156
Here's a story that some of you folks will be familiar with i'd guess?...we've all seen the guys in the game who have done it all according to them?..best dogs blah blah blah!!..well this is a wee tale about one such chap..infact he's a friend of mine nowadays ..A fella who lives very local to me, infact the next street called Phil a great lad loved his hunting, had lurchers (good un's he said?),ferrets does all the shooting malarkey, shotguns, rifles the whole hog asked if he could have a look out with us one night to have a "gander" at our mutts in action .I took my fella Bulpa and my mate Slav took Bulpa's daughter Kes .The night was a real night for the job in hand, the wind took your breath away and the rain that came with it made it very rough indeed .As we reached our starting point up in the Scottish Borders (yes Whin i've been there) ,we made ourselves ready ,Slav doing the lamping,me driving and Phil helping out Slav carrying any hares the dogs were able to catch?.We had set off not to bad with a few in the bag and after just as many fields worked infact we had caught four hares when i looked to my left and in the front passenger seat Phil had his head up against the window snoring and with the heater switched on .Slav never fazed by weather conditions just continued on and i helped out as and when i could with Phil fast asleep all the while .The dogs ran tremendous that night and Phil our "guest" for the evening was missing all the action ,it was when Slav had entered the last field of the night that i realised that Phil was becoming restless in his seat beside me ,i got out to watch Bulpa & Kes strut their stuff, the dogs having to work extremely hard due to the horrendous conditions and also after quite a few "gruellers" endured throughout the course of the night .I jumped the fence and went to help Slav carry the catch from within the field, the rain drops were like marbles ,the wind making even walking difficult,as we reached the fence and were climbing over we heard a voice from within the car ,Slav shone the lamp and with the window now down an inch or so Phil asked "did you get one"?.Slav said "aye" to which Phil said "thats five now eh? not a bad nights work" ,unknown to him the dogs had caught nineteen hares in total and five in that last field ,he had been asleep for the majority of the night and knew nothing about the events and runs the dogs had had .Phil did buy a Minshaw pup bred off Bulpa & Jess and she was a very handy tool but suffice to say he no-longer keeps lurchers only ferrets and guns....his heart just wasn't in the game just like the night he came along with us!...and i've seen a similar scenario MANY times to this over the years as i'm sure most have? ..ATB Andy. BLACKWATER... 157
hard to say as i have had dogs who could kill up the hills but never made the grade localy on hare etc, had abeardie cross catch 68 but on a strong winter hare roe well wa s found out even tho she tried , over the years had several hunting people up , it takes a good dog to take big bags regulary single handed ,but sport for kings as they say,we can all catch i easy places , with medocre dogs or good dogs its when the grounds bare the game are a bit wiser sorts the dogs out andy and gives you further breeding ,hard game for me to keep good types Quote Link to post
FUJI 17,156
I seen on your "own" topic Whin you mentioned going out on moonlit nights with the dogs and letting them do their own thing?..i used to do the same with the Bulpa dog,i could just send him into a copse or plantation and just leave him to it ..caught loads that way, best i got one evening was 4 beasties out of a couple of plantations ..never had another dog that was capable of doing that or not consistantly anyway although i think that Don would do it if i gave him the chance?..i used to enjoy it,hearing the crashing about in darkness then just hold your breath and wait?..brilliant it was and not an easy task to master i personally don't think?..ATB Andy. BLACKWATER... 157
takes years of knowledge and having dogs who will hunt away without help , lana my colie cross was muster and a few i a have about me ,a diffrent ball game m c glenn used to do it alot , even devised old salmon nets across rides thats another story Quote Link to post
FUJI 17,156
Aye it ain't plain sailing lol..i used to take the dazzler just give it a flash in the direction of the copse/plantation even from 200 yards or so and he would be away over the fence and in to do his stuff, never no need for the light after that,it was just the way i taught him and what he knew i wanted him to do?..it's summat i don't or haven't seen a lurcher doing for many a year to be honest but it was something i often done back in the years when i had that Bulpa dog Quote Link to post
