Andy, the hip problem seems to clear up when outcrossed. But also i tested mine and would never breed(i have only ever been involved in breeding one litter of any breed) unless they were a low score or graded A from imports. Its funny you should mention shepherd x collie as my mate used to purposely breed them for competition work as they always had a certain extra something, they seemed to have drive, yet were often calmer than either parent. The pups were only ever black and tan or black and white and many had success with dogs bred this way. But i still think what you now has enough pastoral blood and is ideal matey.........

COULD ANYONE TELL ME IS THERE A TREARMENT FOR WHAT WAS MENTIONED EARLIER IN ANOTHER POST,,RUNNING THE BACK OFF..SOMETHING TO DO WITH LATIC ACID BUILDING UP AND CRAMPING MUSCLE

Vets asap and on a Drip.

Best way to avoid the Screws is know your dogs limits and make sure they are running fit and on a good diet.

After a hard nights - days graft a Heat lamp and kennel coat wont go amiss for 2-3 days.

Clean , dry bed -plenty of it and clean drinking water and bowl.

Dufalite post graft if you know the score with it helps avoid acidosis.

Dufalite ???? any advice on how to use it or do you just know it works, might get some in just in case as a precaution.

Cheers Simo  ,that old bitch i had was the cleverest dog i've EVER encountered in my life, feck it could do everything but talk ..it was my mothers house dog but it tagged along  ..if i left her she would often track me atleast 7/8 miles from home  ,i could see maybe a field or two away her nose down scenting me  ..i used to take her with the lamp now and again just round the doors :icon_redface: ...caught plenty of bunnies although they weren't for human consumption after she'd nabbed them :bad: ..mullered foxes and other critters and was brilliant in real thick cover for flushing Roe and by god if she ever got the chance to get a bit of Roe hide in her jaws :icon_eek: ...are the Belgian Shep's a better option then Simo for lurcher breeding and do they get the hip problem? ATB Andy. ;)

Out off the four breeds of Belgian shepherd Andy the only one worth a damn as a working(sport/service etc) is the Malinois. Although they are lighter boned they are much more high maintenence than a shepherd and require much more "input", personally i wouldn't want one as the malinois high drive temp if passed onto a lurcher would make me lose what little hair and sanity i have left!!! I find shepherds, good ones just as highly driven but a little calmer.......

Interesting stuff there regarding the German Sheps  ,they are dogs i've often thought would make a useful addition in a lurcher, possibly not these though as some of these ain't the quickest to start with :icon_redface: ..but i think Simo said put to a quality coursing type they could certainly add that little "something"? :hmm: and i would agree with that  ..that dog SMART DOG put up is a corker ;) and was obviously a bag filler as he said ;) ...on the hip problem that the German Shep's are renowned for is that something they can pass on when outcrossed or is it just when bred to another German Shep? :hmm: ..i had an Alsation x Collie years ago and by feck it would kill ANYTHING she had a jaw on her like a crocodile and would destroy a hedgerow in pursuit of quarry  ...this isthe old girl here :D ..needed Tess to catch this but Tess was just an arse grabber but when the cavalry arrived :whistling: ...good night vienna

your right about gsdx collie, a farm i used to go to had a fecker, it was big black bugger and he would bite you 100%, he was kept on a chain. He had ago at some scrap blokes once, and bit the one bloke in the arm right mess .! the way i see it a good gsd x to good grey , you will have good(brain, guts, stamina, agilty) from the gsd, and plenty of speed + pace from a good grey. Iknow its been said to use a coursing dog, but i dont think you need it gsd will give the other qualitys you need to catch most game in the uk in the lamp, and thats what i do most of the time. Ive always thought that the less breeds in a dog the better, at least you know with 2 breeds you deff know what your getting

Well i've learnt summat else new...never knew that there was 4 different Belgfian Shep's? :icon_redface: ..i've only ever came across on Alsation/Grey in my life atleast that i know of? He was my mates uncle's dog, looked pretty much identical to the dog SMART DOG put a pic up of except this fella was a brindle colour, feck he was crazy,my mates uncle ended up going to HMP Haverigg...and to be honest the dog went mad  ..it would attack nigh on anyone and one day we went round to the house to take it out to find it looking out at us with it's head protruding from the bottom of the front door :icon_eek: ..it chewed right through the door  ,he was a lovely dog but when his owner went inside it just cracked up..he was ok before that in all ways but even when Smut as he was called's owner came home the dog although more settled still was a fecker for biting people and it had the chap infront of the local magistrates a time or two  ..he could catch a bunny and retrieved lovely and was a cracking looking dog but trustworthy?....not a chance!!..ATB Andy. ;)
