Guest PIKEYLAMPER
Greyhounds are essential in the working lurcher imo, it's either bull, saluki, collie, bedlington, wheaten, whippet, so on an so on its always one of these /greyhound. Once that has been done then people start to mix collie/grey bull/grey this is lurcher/lurcher breeding the reason for this are usually the bull/grey might be to head strong so I know let's add a touch of collie try an up the intelligence an obedience then once all this is said an done an a few years later you have a lurcher you are happy with then your in the dilemma of trying to reproduce this dog the shorter way possible (I hope you all agree) so finding a bitch that is on par with your finished article makes the most sense an gives you the best chance to pull it off. Anyway what I don't understand is after all this hard work an years of breeding why would anyone put There so called finished article back to a collie? I don't know ANYONE that would do that an I've been in an around lurchers an running dogs a long time it's like a 1 step forward 2 step back situation. It's been a good read some good pictures. Guest Moscow
Derbylad IMO it's a very fine line in a lurcher between having it biddable and doing things right yet having it "thick" enough to go out there time after time, run after run with no thought of ever saying "feck this" ..jackers and such are far more likely to come from lurcher x lurcher breeding than a Greyhound blooded dog of that there can be no question? Thick they may be but add them to a pure Saluki and you get pace, mouth and a will to kill,a Bull ain't worth a toss if it needs to catch it's quarry but put to a Greyhound and you have a tool for the job, whatever we think or don't think of them we'd be pretty much be up the creek without a paddle without them? ATB Andy Andy I disagree, quite a lot of the shit and jackers I have seen and owned over the last 20 year have either came from a greyhound dam or been sired by a greyhound dog. Ive also had jackers and shit which ive bred myself from lurcher to lurcher what sorts the men from the boys is what happens to the shit and the jackers though. These days its lurcher to lurcher everytime and sort out whats good and go again from there lurcher to lurcher. Quote Link to post
hedz31 1,308
Genuine question mate are you into dogs or they money? dogs and money dont mix. im sure you will dissagree but we each have our own oppinions. Dogs mate but the Money from the Greys was nice. When it comes to the Greys its about Breeding,Rearing and schooling a Open class Greyhound. Good ones are few and far between. Then to Breed a Group 1 Winner was special. To top it off his littermates were all First Class Competition Winning hounds Winning Group 1s Group 2s and Group 3 Comps as well as many Feature and Sky Opens and a Tk Rec . Sound very money orientated to me Quote Link to post
FUJI 17,327
I done it p***y lol and IMO I've got a dog in my kennel that can do EVERYTHING I want from a lurcher,I don't day course so I don't need him to do that,he ferrets,he lamps and will run and run and keep on running lol,he's obedient, doesn't mind a set of pearlys and has had more beasties then you could shake a stick at in places where 9/10 lurchers would just stand and watch as it's that's rough,he works with the terriers can hunt up and will retrieve owt if the kids shoot anything with the airgun...personally I can't see where I've took 2 steps back? This dog will throw a canny pup with almost type of lurcher or pure blood,he has far more to offer than a pure Collie a Beddy a Wheaton etc..I have had one before similar and it done all I could ever ask for and this dog Don is following in the same vain...he only needs to keep myself and mine happy at the end of the day. bunnys 1,228
Cat amongst the pigeons here ..... but IMO greyhound should not need to be added in any well established lurcher line. Every1 is entitled to an opinion. Fact is if Greyhound Blood was never used half the lurcher lines around today just wouldnt exist. Minshaw Merlin - Eve Whatever , somewhere along the line and usually on more than one occassion Greyhound blood has been added. Imo from time to time Greyhound blood has to be brought back in . Ginny wasnt she out of a bull x Greyhound bitch to a Minshaw dog ? and that Minshaw dog will have Greyhound blood running through its veins somewhere along the line. He said a well established line not at the begining of a line i think you have misunderstood what he ment, all or most lurchers have greyhound in there make up and i wouldnt use greyhound from time to time in a line i would rather use a fast lurcher from a line with proven speed and good wind or a coursing bred dog top post atb bunnys Quote Link to post
