FUJI 17,156
Hey up Johnny & Derbylad...i never actually owned Chester i bred him but my mate the Ginger Hunter owned him,i ran with the dog from day one until his last though ,he was a real good lurcher, knew when to drop a gear, made gear look pretty daft to be honest at times,,lovely dog to watch at work ..good fieldcraft, good pace, brilliant retriever and steady as a rock..Ginger Hunter actually got two pups from the litter he had one very similar in looks to Millet's pup Lil he called it Andy ..it was every bit the dog Chester was, took "earth" dwelling animals as good as a bull x,probably had a bit more do or die attitude then Chester,he was desperate to catch everything he ran to the point of being rather injury prone ..GH moved him on to someone down in Wigan? The reason he got rid of him was he was returning from a trip out and had Andy & Chester in the motor and the Andy dog had his son kind of pinned in the motor with his teeth snarling so he was away to feck..a real possesive dog over his catch he was and with youngsters around he couldn't be trusted ..GH took Chester down the Fens where he killed but said the dog wasn't the type fordown there as it required a "different" kind of stamina to the lamping game? He also ran him at Altcar where he again scored with little fuss ..the old Bulpa dog grandfather to the two aforementioned wasn't short of pace, obviously he wasn't blessed with the most but he was fast enough for lamping,he did have gears believe it or not ,most of the Minshaw types are renowned for having a great strike on them and this old dog was no different, very clever running dog with a knack of knowing exactly when to drop a cog and home in for the kill ..Chester's dam Kelsey was a real up and at em pacy type, feck she could torture a hare but although i killed a lot of gear with her she wouldn't be as strong in the stamina department as many of the other dogs from the strain..i always knew when she was on her penultimate race..legs would be like jelly and eyes like this lol..but she gave her all every time and you can't ask for more than that?..ATB Andy. freelance 448
Like i said earlier in the thread i owned two back in the 90,s, one didn't make the grade but i had bags and bags of fun with the other one and the scorched earth merchants hanging off the back of a van lamping and generally up to no good. Mine didn't particularly muscle up well or have a good running gait/style but thats just the way he was, but he did fill my freezer. I know there not everyone's cup of tea but it would be a boring world if we all liked the same Atb 1 Quote Link to post
FUJI 17,156
Here's a wee tale for Whin about freelancing and challenges ..well a bit of a fairy tale some would say? ... When the talk of "my dogs better than yours" starts floating around it's not long before challenges are put out either with fists or hopefully between the said mentioned dogs! This scenario was to happen between two owners of litter brothers bred from Vic's dog Blue. They were called Dan & Mick,T owned Dan and as S hunted with T it was to be those two that put out the challenge to J and Mick,i sort of tagged along with J at the time and had been running Mick over a period of time and thought he was in pretty good order so it was to be me and J with Mick against Dan his owner T & S.The bet was struck £200 for the dog which killed more hares single handed on the night with 4 runs each before the other dog got it's chance and so on,hands shook,we awaited for the green light when the match was to be on and just kept our dog Mick ticking over. The night was chosen and off we went,as we exited Carlisle S & T pulled over in their Escort Mexico and we followed suit in J's Toyota Starlet.T came to our car and told me to jump in with S which i did,but T got into the drivers seat of J's car and J got into the passenger seat which i thought a little strange? As we reached our destination and got parked up T,S and Dan were quickly into action,we hadn't even got Mick out the car and Dan killed his 1st hare right at our feet beside our car! As we made ready and got Mick out Dan was already well into his 2nd run and again he ended the run quickly with a fantastic kill, his 3rd run he was unlucky not to catch as the hare popped over the brow of a hill and made his escape with Dan all over it like a rash.Dan ran upto his 4th hare and took him right out of the seat so 3 from 4 runs was a great start. Now it was Mick's turn, well Mick wasn't the most impressive of runners, not the best of dogs in the turn and never had a selection of gears either but he did have stamina and plenty of it so even with a tardy start we thought he may still do ok if the night turned into a long one! On Mick's 1st run the hare looked very much the boss and had Mick looking pretty tardy but as the race progressed Mick started to take over the show and after quite a lengthy run he caught his hare. His 2nd run was a 100 yard run where the hare comfortably made his escape through an open gate into a neighbouring field. The 3rd hare was a very good run and with the ebb flowing in favour of the hare then back to Mick and then back to the hare Mick was fortunate to kill his hare after the hare ran into the hedge stunning himself and giving Mick his chance which he duly took.Killing 2/3 for Mick was probably as good as we could of hoped for to start with but before we could get our 4th run we seen a vehicle on the road and turn into the farm lonning where our cars were parked,we sneaked back towards them and as we approached the vehicle which had turned down the farm lonning set off down towards the farmhouse so we ran like hell to the cars only to find S's Escort on it's side in the hedge,we got it on all four wheels and put the dogs in 1st then myself and J got in our car with S & T behind us in there's from behind came two landrovers without lights on and at the last instance put on their lights and blocked S & T in so we bolted but unknown to me J had been blindfolded by T to stop him knowing where he was going and didn't have a clue where we were at? I couldn't drive back then so he may as well of asked the dog which way to go lol! We must of covered the best part of Dumfriesshire that night but we did eventually find our way home,S & T were put infront of the Sheriff as they are called up North of the Border and received a hefty fine for their troubles. As for the "challenge",no money was handed over but being truthful i think we may of got beaten that night because i got to see Dan many times after that and he was a bloody good hare killer,Mick caught his share but i think he might just of been playing second fiddle on that night....ATB Andy. 6 Quote Link to post

ATB..B Thanks busher, was there much wastage in the litters with this type? well i think the problem then was' and im talking years ago now' that the minshaws ov the old typ i would call them was all ready a prity heavy boned dog n built like breze blocks some ov them'' so to go bk to a bull cross bitch then ''ie'' half breed or bull lurcher... the chances where u could get to much bone n not inuff speed n to much bulk... in your pups.. i supose it was hit n miss realy... u can even see it today in the modern bull cross when put together' some are very heavy indeed for the job ahead ov them.. iv always favored the bull lurcher x bull lurcher type'' i think the main asset to any good charlie dog is ''speed'' weather it be round cover or open land.. dont get me wrong iv seen some great 1/2 breed bull greyhounds n one or two 5/8 3/8 but i favor the latter... on the subject ov litter wastage'' years ago a mate ov mine breed his bitch witch was the MICKY dog off here over a greyhound bitch .. nigger was the sire to micky'''' the bitch was breed bk to M.R.. OBOE minshaw breed.. the pups was out standing' but at a few monthes old thay all manifested 'hip displacia' barr one i think'' the vet told me who wev ued for years' that hip displacia is very common in pups that are breed when the parents are two closeley related' he asked me if dam n sire where related in any way'' n thay sertanly was'' but he also stated that u could do same breeding again and all would be fine... so it looked like we was bk to the HIT N MISS thing again..
