FUJI 17,288
Vic Minshaw always states that the first dog which started this strain was Rip who was bred from along the lines of his fathers lines of racing whippets,he was basically a "mooching" dog, standing barely 21 inch,he was capable of killing daytime hares, tackling a fox, rabbits, pheasants but what he loved doing as much as anything was taking ducks off the local river or even the local Gamekeeper's ponds.I have also told this story of Rip,but i will tell it once more for those who don't know?.Vic Minshaw was a known poacher in the main and the local Gamekeeper who was known as Mad Michael had a tunnel view vendetta towards him,as he was picking up bits and pieces of tales about Vic and his dog regularly poaching his land.On one occasion Mad Michael even had the audacity to stop Vic in a nearby village when Vic was passing through on his motorbike,he filled Vic in,in the middle of the road and when a passer-by came to Vic's aid,he too got a good kicking. Not to be outdone Vic and Rip continued their assault on Mad Michael's ground and on this day, were treking over his fields again when they passed one of the ponds which always held a few ducks, the old dog when into his later years entered the pond,to do what he had always done..catch ducks!!.The keeper had been watching Vic crossing his land and hid himself close to the pond knowing exactly where he and Rip would be heading? Hiding in the wood edge close to the pond he waited until Rip entered the pond and Vic standing close by he then let two barrels go from his shotgun!,instinctively Vic was off,no sign of Rip as he ran back towards his home,he went home expecting to be greeted by Rip but he wasn't there?,he returned to the pond via his original route later that day and still no sign again. He searched high and low until two days later a letter arrived with photo's in,showing Rip dead, and one even showed that his legs and head had been cut off!!.Vic took this lunatic to court but the keeper got away with that and even told him that he had Rips feet turned into poker stands while awaiting to go into court..He is still the Gamekeeper to this very day albeit helped by his sons, and the name he was given many years ago still sticks with him,Mad Michael....another travesty for this dog Rip probably the creator of this strain?.ATB Andy 3 Quote Link to post

ATB Andy. never a truer word spoken! That wasn't the end of it though B There was still a sting in the tail for Vic Minshaw even after the Rip episode with Mad Michael,Vic tried to get revenge on the Gamekeeper by raiding his pheasant pens, this he done on a regular basis but eventually Mad Michael twigged on ,he telephoned the local Gamedealers and asked if they had been offered lots of pheasants and when he got the reply by Vic Minshaw from one of them this was all the evidence he needed to bring Vic infront of the local magistrates, they sent him to do his porridge for six months,so Mad Michael won the day again...unbelievable ,but totally true .ATB Andy. dazzz 421
I've told this tale before and most of you have probably read it or know the craic about how Vic Minshaw's dog Blue met his maker. If this dog had died of old age then that would of been fine, even if he had been killed when at work or through illness but no,this dog met a far more grisly end. When in his later years old Blue was seen regularly trawling the streets for whatever reason that may of been?,and even then he liked to think of himself as the best,in more ways than one.He was never frightened of anything and would never shirk a battle, but on this day the wrong dog crossed his path, for even in his youth he could only ever be second. The dog he chose to disagree with was an American Pit Bull, the end result was obvious, for now he was in decline and not the force of old,the big strong brute of a dog he once was,was just a shadow of his former self. This warrior who had made his name legendary throughout Cumbria and much farther afield, with his phenomenal bags of game which he had caught running single handed, drew his final breath on the pavement of a council estate in the jaws of an American Pit Bull..what a sad end to a real champion of a dog . ATB Andy. i never met vic but my good mate did and i think busher was there that day,,,,he said when he asked where blue was he said i dont know he does his own thing,he whistled the dog and the next thing the dog came over a 6ft gate, he said the dog was like it had been chiselled out of granit and in fine fettle but just wandered the estate at will lol. anyway he then went into vic's and looked at his albums the lad im talking about has done his share over the years but he said the pic's where in a different league and almost unbelievable. did old blue or vic get in bother for killing a staffy andy???? 2 Quote Link to post
FUJI 17,288
It did kill a Staffy Daz yes..a couple of my old dogs Bulpa and Jack were b*****ds for scrapping if they ever got the chance..not just a flare up they knew how to fight..legs tucked back and proper to the death..f*****g frightening at times,Bulpa lived in a little kennel on a chain away from the other dogs and Jack had to be kenelled on his own or with a bitch (Kelsey)..you couldn't trust either of them as far as you could throw them but when hunting they could go in another dogs company no problem? Quirky feckers they were and to be honest although Swift is so laid back she has a real wicked streak in her,i've only seen it a few times but she's worth watching lol...ATB Andy. Quote Link to post
dazzz 421
cheers Andy,,,,it's funny you should say that about swift as that is how i would describe Ruby,,,layed back soft as shite but she has a streak, especially as a guard dog, i had an electrician the other week doing a job for me, the dog knew he was there but i kept the door shut, anyway he came in to tell me he had finished and feck me all hell broke loose,,,put it this way i thought i knew the dog inside out and she surprised me and not least him lol. get some more stories up atb daz 1 Quote Link to post
FUJI 17,288
This is the true story of one of my previous hunting buddies,he was the owner of the little black bitch Kes,on one of the two occasions she was mated to Vic's Blue he kept himself a white and black dog called Lad,this dog was a beast of a dog,not over tall but built like a brick shithouse,he had legs on him like tree trunks .He was a fine running dog, lovely to watch at work, possessed all the qualities which you would associate with a class dog,he had staying power, field craft, strike and lots of pace, when this dog was just coming into what should of been his prime this dog was poisoned and killed with weills disease,he had the makings of being a superstar imo but sadly we never got to find that out?,in only his second season lamping he caught 20 hares in one night when running with his mother Kes so things were looking rosy at that time?.This was only the beginning of a streak of bad luck my mate was to have.Next time his old bitch came in season he mated her to a dog called Boy.This time he kept two dogs he named these Jack and Lad,these dogs were up into their first lamping season and coming along superb when one night i was actually doing the lamping myself and running a hare with Jack when he struck the hare on a hedge bottom, done a complete somersault and broke his neck and was killed instantly. So back he went again and mated Kes with Boy again, this time i got a pup which is my now sadly passed away bitch Kelsey and he kept back a blue and white dog he named Conan, when the pups were only days old Kes the dam was unfortunately ran over right outside his house ,the pups had to be hand reared until they were able to fend for themselves .The dogs got up to lamping age and on only their third run ever on the lamp Conan clipped the edge of a ditch and broke his neck ,this finished my mate ,he did come for a rare run out with his only survivor Lad who is sire to the Flick,Flint,Flame and Jess dogs, but intruth his once eagerness for the game had gone, but in fairness, who could blame him?.He was a fantastic hunting partner, and a great dog man, this was confirmed as he took to racing greyhounds and owned and trained a dog called Blue Boy on the flapping tracks he was a son of the great Adraville Bridge, this dog broke the track record on our local track which had stood for over twenty years, myself and him went all over Britain with this dog open racing and this dog was hardly ever beaten, and that was over 2,4 and 6 bends.I had some great times hunting with him, lamping and also terrier work,he was totally fearless(or maybe stupid),in that the highest risk area's got exactly the same treatment as anywhere else. His son his into the hunting game and he's back on the lookout for a lurcher after a long layoff but when you have that flame burning deep inside it's only a matter of time until your back ATB Andy . 8 Quote Link to post

bunnys 1,228
andy your honest reply earlier impressed me but ffs this post, the pics, stories and history just keep getting better Thankyou fella ..it does help when you've been around a while i suppose ..i know lads who have done more than myself but don't bother with t'internet and such, just look at Chalkwarren and the graft he's done in this game and for a lot longer than i?,lot's of "die hards" of the hunting game around,i take my hat off to each and every one of them because i know to get up there with the best and last it out it takes SERIOUS dedication to the point of putting nearly all and sundry in your life on the backburner ...looking back i wouldn't change one thing when it comes to my hunting ways ...looking forward i hope i can continue to find the work to run my dogs and run them hard..they are bred to withstand the vigours of hard graft and as long as i'm able they will get exactly that... ..ATB Andy. top draw post andy very very true to the last word atb bunnys Quote Link to post

ATB Andy. Sad tale, that Andy. Kind of mirrors what happened to one of, possibly the, best Whippets of the late 60's here in the North East, Blue Boy, He won more than his share of races, killed any amount of hares and left his stamp on generations of pups, but was left to roam the streets in his old age, searching for grub and fighting the local mongrels, until he ended his days in a ditch, hit by a car,,,,,,,, no way for an old warrior to go. Cheers. 2 Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,216
Only down side of such a fantastic post, is that there will probably be umpteen litters on done deal / gumtree etc, sold as 'minshaws', (collie/grey x saluki/grey ) exept i suppose, that they will be able to quote the lineage now Buyer beware 1 Quote Link to post
