Pig boy 29
Hi guys, My mate has a border collie bitch coming up 5 years soon, she is real racey and has an unreal retreiving ability, she's real biddable and loves being able to please anyone with her retreiving. She's from working parents, both are real good at there jobs but she is just kept as a pet. The thing is my mate though it would be a good idea to cross her with a greyhound and use the pups as workers. But i'm not sure if this is sensible so before i say anything to him i wanted to know what you guys think of this? Please help as i'm personaly not sure! Look foward to some replies, Pig boy Quote Link to post
sandymere 8,263
If shes from good working parents etc then theres no reason not to use her, in race horses most brood mares never raced but are bred from good stock, its the genetics your after at the end of the day. Quote Link to post
Good Man 196
If she is one of them collies that chase car tires and is hyper, then no, as a lot can be neurotic! Temperament, stamina ect, good working ability, play a big part. Some collies have eye defects as well, another thing to look out for. This collie below, is here in ireland, doing very well and thinks for him self ect, some may think his not right, but he is not far from what i would use.. Simoman 110
My first question would be, why do you want to breed a litter? Quote Link to post

Pig boy 29
Simoman: The answer to your question is i don't want to breed off her, it's my mate and his mums idea. I don't think they should hence why i asked Thank you everyone who posted Quote Link to post
Pig boy 29
Good man thanks for the video mate! Quote Link to post
Simoman 110
It wasn't a critisism aimed at you, just far too many people breed without any real thought behind it........ Quote Link to post
Pig boy 29
I know mate, but that is the thing with him and his mum, they think that it's easy; the dog gives birth and then they'll have a load of people knocking on there door Quote Link to post
morton 5,368
I know mate, but that is the thing with him and his mum, they think that it's easy; the dog gives birth and then they'll have a load of people knocking on there door They need to consider the considerable amount of time, trouble and financial cost of tending to a pregnant bitch and resultant litter, when you sit down and work it all out, going over every possible scenario that may crop up,then double it,this may give you a slight idea of what lies ahead. Then there,s the trouble of homing the pups, remembering there is allready a saturated market out there and many pups failing to find a home.I doubt any advice, unless it encourages the breeding, will be heeded.
