how does the law stand with catapults?

Recommended Posts

It is completly legal to hunt small game with a catapult as long as you have permission on the land...it does however take loads of practice to be good at it....i just carnt seem to master it that well...they can be legally over 12flbs that air rifles fire at and with the .38 steel ball bearings they pack a hell of a punch.....As with being stopped just tell them your on your way to your permission to hunt small game that are specified on general licence nout they can do about it mate

they can ask you where your permission is and who the landowner is then call round at said land owners.. depends how anally retentive they are

Taking photos of police officers beating a guy up, and refusing to get down off a bus shelter and give them my camera memory card.

that would be a different matter altogether I reckon, best thing to do then.....leg it!

just stretch the catapult elastic round your head with the fork pointing outwards from your forehead and say it's a new style of hat you've invented and you're road testing it. They'll just assume you're mental and will let you be on your way

I think you just put me off them too :0

When I was a kid I used to make cattys out of a shelf bracket and a load of elastic bands knotted together, the ammo we used was lost head nails bent over at the end so they hooked on the bands and were pretty lethal. One time me and my mate got collared by this older lad who was a bit of a dick and demanded a go but the thick fecker kept his thumb stuck up and nearly knocked it off ;) , I've never heard a squeal like that and his thumb nail went purple and started swelling straight away and I'd imagine it was broken underneath, apparently it was my fault not the fact he was a putty head.

Its either classed as an offensive weapon or a firearm. I shouldnt think it would be classed as a firearm but i dont know without checking. Either way if your caught with it your going to get nicked for it. As for being on land without permission with it your getting nicked for one or more of these: armed trespass or trespass in pursuit of game. If you use it as a weapon: assualt with an offensive weapon OR assualt with a firearm OR assualt with a deadly weapon, they COULD potentially even call it attempted murder if you shoot it at someones head.

Ha! we did similar but with folded wads of paper. Another beauty was to cut the end off shoe laces and push a pin through it to form a sort of mini dart. And use them through a biro tube in a sort of pea shooter style.

Advanced classroom weaponary! LOL

You carnt get nicked for walking up the street with one as long as it's not on show and unloaded and your on way to one of your permission....i walk through my town with my rifle on way to one of my perms and never had issue's with police. They are not illegal and only time you would get nicked is if you had threatened someone.

Catapult law

It is completely legal to shoot rabbits with a catapult with the intention to kill. So if you are looking for dinner you can use a catapult, it is legal.

However you must :

a. Have permission from the landowner to do so first!

b. Be proficient enough to be able to kill, and must use suitable projectiles to ensure this! For example steel ball bearings.

c. Intend to kill.

It is also important to note : The Wild Mammals Protection Act 1996 which makes it an offence to injure, maime, beat with sticks, torment, burn, wild animals etc. etc. In other words not to kill but merely to cause suffering. Therefore if you are seen shooting at a rabbit time and time again without killing or stunning the rabbit only hitting it, this could be seen as contrary to this act, and would need to answer for it, possibly in court. Therefore power, accuracy, using adequate and suitable projectiles, and at a range whereby an accurate shot will kill is vital to be, and be seen to be within the law.
