satan80 358
Hi, Looking for some advice... My pup is 10 weeks old, currently feeding Alpha Sporting Puppy. He eats like a horse, loves his food, but all the reading and research i'm doing suggests that raw is the way forward if i want him at the peak of his powers in the future! Also, he has a shite several times a day which i don't think is a great sign that the food he's on is being used by his body in the best way, i know myself if food goes through me that quickly then something isn't right! My plan is to get him on mince/chicken from a decent supplier (Berrywoods any good?) I've sounded out my local butcher and he says i can have all the bones i want for nowt which is handy. Carbs wise i'm thinking brown pasta/rice, does anyone feed potatoes, if so how? Also not sure how to serve veg, i've read that many dogs wont eat it just chopped up and thrown in so some blend it, thoughts? The pup is on 3 meals a day currently, i'm thinking a transitioning period might be worthwhile, don't know whether to cut the amount of dry stuff in half and throw in meat/veg to all meals, or keep him on complete for breakfast then give him a couple of bones at lunch, and fully raw for dinner? I am aware that i sound like a proper muppet fussing like this, and i know it's not rocket science and i'm probably over thinking it, but just interested in others opinions as i think the pup deserves a decent start and will be worth a bit of effort in the long run
beast 1,884
whatever mix of meat/veg/ etc you go for, (and there are a multitude of different opinions!) introduce it gradually. the different bacteria present in meat will be alien to your puppys gut and if you overload it you will end up with bad diarrhoea which can be very dangerous for little ones. some people like to start with a little cooked meat and gradually reduce the cooking time until the meat is raw over the space of a couple of weeks. personally i just give a tiny grape sized piece of raw meat, two or three times a day then over two or three weks i slowly replace the dry food with meat. some folk say you shouldnt mix the two but i think youre ok as long as the two different food types are not in the same meal.
robwelsh 354
Go completely raw, as for carbs I give my bitch some brown bread ..and scrambled eggs..be carefull of the bones etc, it can be like shutting concrete for them, my bitch gets abit like this every so often..also worming will be more regular too..as for bones, give say one chicken carcuss after each meal..it will keep there teeth in good nick..but I wouldn't go from one extreme to the other as said above..Atb
