Ive got a few permissions that are full of rabbits an other life and I've just brought a cross man nitro venom 22 , it was a rushed decision and wish I was more patient and did some research but we all make mistakes ! I went out last week after my rifle had been zeroed in an sorted , I fluffed a few shots but I managed to bag 4 wood pigeons ! And then Sunday night I went up to do a spot of lamping and I couldn't hit a rabbit to save my life has any one got any tips or anything I might be doing wrong ? It's really pissing me off ! Phantom 631 Posted May 15, 2012 Report Share Posted May 15, 2012 Practice until you can put 9 out of ten shots in a one inch group at all the ranges you will be shooting Now LAMPING is just the same as shooting in the daylight hours UNFORTUNATEY your eyes and brain tell you things are different Getting used to distances under the lamp is very hard at first and go for a month or two without doing it and you need to learn it all again!!! I had tremendous difficulty when I first started lamping depending on your brain, things will be either closer or (More likely) further away than you think. I have made some markers (out of those plantpot plastic markers) at 5 yard increments, bung em in the ground at those ranges, and it will help you a little, but "Dead-Land" (ie dips un the terrain) can really help cock things up If it's at all possible, spend as much time on the land during the day and look for specific markers at ranges your familiar with,that are identifiable at night to help. Other than that, it's really something that your own eyes and brain need to be trained into being able to do, I still have difficulty Tony 1 Quote Link to post

That or you can pop around to mine when you are free for a cuppa and a chat. Dont get too hung up on your misses buddy, it may not even be all your fault and it could be that you are using a poor quality pellet at a distance that you and the pellet are not meant to be at. Like the others have said realy, if your baging four wood pidgeons then you can clearly shoot well enought to bag rabbits, but lamping is a whole diif thing, judging ranges etc it all takes time, alot of paper punching always helps me, printing out life size rabbits on the printer marking 1" dots on there head then putting them out at diff ranges and making sure you get a near perfect average at hitting the kill zone and working out what ranges you are comfortalbe with shooting at, then even try that at night and see how you get on! Well Lurchers are good for some forms of hunting; as are Jack Russle dogs Wait till you do some real hunting with a dog mate, 100 times better than shitty guns. Or you could do both, not like you can slip a lurcher on a Pidgeon! Make sure you do , Si has forgotten more about ballistics and hunting than most of us will ever learn Si taught me how to calibrate my scope for ranges and Muzzle Energy specific to my rifle, scope and pellet combination in a matter of minutes than what I had learned in over 5 years as a 'lone hunter' :not worthy: Quote Link to post

Rangefinders are a great help, as long as you can see the display! Mine is spot on, alas it doesn't have an illuninated display so at ight its very limited. Tony Quote Link to post
