hw 100 .22 or 177

Recommended Posts

i currently own a hw 100 t in 22 cal. its used mainley for hunting. but for some reason ive been thinking about trading it in for a 177 kt. i could really do with some advice on this subject, i know its been done to death, ut could a few people thats used both rifles give me their honest opinions on both. i understand the flatter trajectory of the .177 and the benefits. but which rifle is really best suited for rabbits and squirrel control. thanks guys.

I've changed to .177 and wished I had done it years ago.Hit the kill zone and it will drop them the same as a .22.If you like to work out your distances and holdover stick to .22.If you can get hold of a .177, give it a go.You'll be surprised.

Have a read of this mate, my first outing with the HW100 in .177 cal

As said above if you can hit the kill zone then it is game over regardless of caliber. It is defiantly easier to judge flight path because of the slower curve, which will give the confidence to take shots without having to do all the sums. Both calibers are accurate but one requires more thought and calculation

No experience with 100's but you put kt... so you're not only losing shot count with smaller cylinder (i presume) but also on the calibre change. Won't be enormous i shouldn't have thought but a consideration nonetheless.

My Hw100 k sporter does around 60/70 full power shot's...look at it this way...if you killed every thing you shoot...can you carry 60ish rabbit's.?

My cylinder stay's in the van so its never far away if I need to fill the rifle.

I love the 177 but this morning when i saw that little s200 .22 for sale I was so close to pm..ing you...Id love that rifle but the missis was on my case the second i mensiond it to her..but only because i live in a static caravan ansd where limited on storage...flipping heck im thinking about it again ID LOVE THAT LITTLE RIFLE.!!!!

That's ok, trade ya the tx and s200 for your Hw. Mrs can't complain, not your fault your rifle morphed into two!

That said, had a sleep on it last night and I'd happily keep the s200 it is just so good. I reckon beneath it all I'm a skinflint who begrudges paying over a tenner for a tin if ammo.

I've recently found, with my rangefinder reticle, the .22 is easy! 30 yard zero with each mil being roughly 10 yard increments at 8x mag. Simples for me! Worked that out using strelok and chairgun...

ive been in the same boat as you mate with the same gun in question too, ive decided im either going to save up and have both or buy a conversion kit to 177. (about 30-40mins work to change it each time though)

i definately cant bring my self to swap completely though

gl with deciding

Bisley Mags or AA Field 4.52 seem to be the popular choice and are worth trying as is JSB Exact Heavies.I have yet to find a pellet that groups better than the Bisley Mags through my R-10.Let us know how you get on yours.

Cheers guys. But I'm still non the wiser lol. I love the hw 100 .22 cal. And shot count ain't really an issue as I have 2 dive bottles. I've been doing a quite a bit of practicing at lots of distances and different elevations recently, and I've found it's helped no end. I'm much more confident, taking shots that before would have made me overthink the shot and miscalculate. So I would Deffo say that the more practice that I have pit in with the 22 the easier the judging of the flightpath of the pellet.
