KittleRox 2,147
mind charti doesn,t make the rules folks You're right, 'Roxy ! I still go to the "dogs", (Whippet Racing), on a saturday morning, and get into arguments about 55lb, half x greyhounds being called Whippets !! My usual reposte is "there has been smaller Greyhounds won the Waterloo Cup " !! But I still love it; it's dedicated dog men and women breeding, training and racing outstanding dogs !! So fair play to them ! Cheers. can i add charti, not just the men and women but whole families grannies fed them, kids walked them etc. without a doubt it's the best family orientated sport bar none, a weekend at the championships or one of the bigger opens was tops, never a raised word, racers from all classes of society, at night there was always a party at some tent or a free feed or beer at another I would,ve imagined there would,ve been a few raised words if characters like Charti were attending lol Quote Link to post

It was VERY competitive, and back in the days when I was a teenager and just into the "dogs", I witnessed many a fight in the car park, when a match didn't go the way it was supposed to !! LOl !! I've got an old diary from 1972, where i kept a record of my dogs winnings, (and losses). We were running matches back then for hundreds of pounds, and people travelled from as far as Lancs/Yorks up to Nothumberland to run matches. Nothing like that in the Whippet racing these days. KittleRox 2,147
As the non ped racing whips, are basically bred to get to a to b as quick as possible How would you find them in the field, they are meant to be faster on the track than a ped, but ped whippets appear to have good stamina for a whippet, and many have excellent nose, an important feature for a rabbiting dog. Having been a around bwra racing whippets my opion is that they are very fine built as they have to be, to get a big a dog that can run well as light as possible. This means they are not as robust as a kc working whippet in my opinion but i would think are much faster pound for pound. You could have a 21" bwra dog whippet running at 25/26lb a kc working type of that size would probably be over 30lb. I used to give my fathers racing dogs a run on the rabbits odd times but they were injury prone so he stopped me taking them out. Sounds daft but i think they are probably to fast and lightweight for running rough ground. I would not say they are all like this but ours were. this one had a few injurys running on the track, i dont think it would have lasted long working. aimed at birdog, after reading the above post, do Bobs dogs get many injurys working ? lifelong cumbrian 1,826
I would agree that bwra racing is a brilliant sport and the people involved are very knoledgeable people who can get their dogs in superb shape, as said it is more than a sport to a lot of them it is their lives. I for one have seen some of these dogs doing times you would not belive and as been said the bloodlines go back generations, i dont care if there is greyhound in them i just admire them for what they are super fast game little dogs. As i have said i would not personally have one to hunt with but a crossbred one i definetly would. The best daytime rabbit dog i have ever seen was a track bred dog 30 odd years ago and he used to knock himeself up quite often. I remember my father once gave a little bitch that was just short of open class to an old ferreting guy it was bred out of gold rush and nimbull, the old fella said he had worked ferreting dogs all his life and never had on as good. birddog 1,354
i suppose we all play a kind of russian roullette every time our dogs run, my young bitch got lucky this morning and come away with just bruising and a graze, the thing with non peds is they really are just so fast, (if anyone reading this hasn't seen them i'd recommend a visit to a bank holiday open or similar) a slower stronger made dog like my collie cross takes knocks in her stride that would retire a non ped, kc whippets are a little stronger made and also slower so wont injure themselves to the same extent. the big difference in their breeding is kc bred have been bred for generations for showing, looks, personality and working as well as racing the non ped has been bred with just one thought in mind it didn't matter if they were ugly, snappy or whatever as long as they were fast and its the out and out speed thats their downfall Quote Link to post
chartpolski 23,243
I remember when the 1st cross Whippet/Greys came up here. It was because the went to heavy or high for the racing down south. Dogs like Daisy, Robbo, (Bilko X Greyhound), Johns Rocket, Tiger Bay, also 1st crosses, and many others, this was about 1970, and they murdered our so called "Whippets", which were basicaly small Lurchers ! We thought, "well, at least our dogs can race, AND catch a hare!", but then I saw Daisy and Robbo run hares single handed and destroy them ! I had an 18" Yorkie Boy X Greyhound, a terrific racer, and a mate had her litter brother, "Kojak", 23" and would kill a hare as good as owt I've seen since.... he also won the "All England Scratch Race" ! Back in them days we ran AND coursed them...Now the very best will only see a track, never a hare. Cheers. Quote Link to post

Phil Lloyd 10,738
The overall look of the Hard Bloods has definitely changed... I remember our Bilko bred dogs... They were built like little staffs,..bull necks,..big wide backs, and small, but strong jaws.. Same as many other lads, we ran them on anything that got up in front... It was good... Nowadays,..the whippeteers are pretty well clued up, as regards breeding the type of dog they need to WIN,...and there is no place for the original, chunky, short coupled sorts that I favoured. In fact, some of today's 'stars' are so fecking fast, that only a fool would waste them on a poxy woodland rabbit... Almost like using a Porsche to deliver logs in... Beautiful examples of canine perfection though,...and when you see a nice trim Non-Ped, walking round the lurcher show ring,..well,.they truly, are bang fecking tidy... Quote Link to post
