jak n meg 4
my border bitch is about 3 and half years old now, i took her out yeserday to an earth that in my eyes had all the signs of cubs being home small fresh shits around and real fresh phesant bodys all around. the soil was well paddled around the entrance so there must have been somthing there now she has never come face to face with a live fox. she has had plenty of rags on dead ones that have been shot, i entered her to this earth and she would get so far and it seemed as if she couldent get any further she was whining with wat seemed thike frustration so do u think that the cubs had made holes that she couldent get down? i filled in the holes and i am going back 2day and i am hoping the vixen hasent moved all her cubs yet. so can sombody tell me whats going on i thought it could be lack of experience on my boders side of things. cheers jak Quote Link to post
zap 4
everychance there in there but it will be real tight the vixen has chose this place as she feels her cubs will be safe so unless they need to be dealt with why not leave them until there a real test Quote Link to post
mussells 0
if you have disturbed it she will probably move them on quick! Quote Link to post

oyama 27
A vixen defending her cubs is not the best type of fox as a 1st attempt.Plus you can only kill something once! Quote Link to post
Guest whitser
A vixen defending her cubs is not the best type of fox as a 1st attempt.Plus you can only kill something once! agreed. a earth with cubs is not a good place to start a beginner. Quote Link to post
mouse 282
if she has cubs in there and youre dog has never seen a fox to ground you could be asking for trouble.wait until later in the year then give her a run.could ruin the dog mate. Quote Link to post
THE POACHER 13
because theres signs of cubs doesnt always mean they are there the season is only 3 1/2 months away surley you can wait that extra bit longer Quote Link to post
waz77 15
Cubs in tight spots can make even the most experianced dog struggle, and if you've disturbed them then gone away vixen will almost certainly have moved them on.Starting dog on cubs is a pointless excercise IMO cos its no different to killing rabbits, its nothing like the real thing. You'll drop on a big un eventually and when you do if the dog does the biz then you can be proud and know that the dog has started working properly.IMO Quote Link to post
Squirrel_Basher 17,100
Cubbing dens are usually dug out rabbit spots [down our way anyhow].The vixen digs a tube straight in to a chamber where the cubs are born .When disturbed, the cubs simply disappear up these tubes where NO terrier can follow without digging on .This time of year with well grown cubs ,the vixen lies out mostly, going to the den to feed them and but not lay in with them .Where theres a lot of holes or seperate buries ,cubs will be spread out .If an earth gets too smelly with carrion ,they will move to another. As cubs get older they too spend less and less time underground .Digging them is not as easy as some would have you believe .Good luck with the border . Birdboy 2
This picture is from a few seasons back where I was helping a mate out. Marked in a old rabbit warren, not easy for the dog, although this terrier was experienced still hard work for him getting up to the quarry. No place for a pup or an unexperienced dog when coming face to face with it in a tight spot. Bird boy Quote Link to post
jak n meg 4
thanxs alot for all ya your advice it has helped Quote Link to post
Guest ragumup
The advice already given is good, and buy foxdropper is spot on, but if you needed the cubs dead {ie for a keeper }then you need to dig down to the dog and then dig on the mark the dog gives, as the some of cubs will not be far away up tiny pipes often if you get a torch and shine it down the pipes you may see them Quote Link to post
axel 0
Seen a nice size vixen with 4 decent cubs entering an old billy sett yesterday, had my old red bitch and my bigarse 10month old patt who is a 15" strong dog whos only worked rats and ragged a few dead foxs. my patt was ame to go as was the bich but i left them for another day, my patt is a big strong dog but this would not have been a good place to start....... dont ruin ya dog by being to eager.
